John SHEPPARD (c.1515–1558) Media vita - Westminster Cathedral Ch/Martin Baker rec. 2016 HYPERION CDA68187 [79:45] [BW] A first-class introduction for those who don’t know Sheppard’s music and a strong recommendation for those who already do.

Rory BOYLE (b.1951) Music for clarinet - Fraser Langton (clarinet) Rosalind Ventris (viola) James Willshire (piano) rec. 2016 DELPHIAN DCD34172 [60:08] [MR] A long-established if reserved Scottish composer, much influenced by Lennox Berkeley, makes a rare but welcome appearance on disc with some well-crafted music for clarinet.

Anton BRUCKNER (1824-1896) Symphony No.6 - Oberösterreichisches Jugend SO/Rémy Ballot rec. 2016 GRAMOLA 99127 SACD [69.10] [DBi] The slowest Bruckner Sixth on the market but one well worth hearing.

Nicolaus BRUHNS (1665-1697) Complete Cantatas - Harmonices Mundi/Claudio Astronio rec. 2015 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 95138 [2 CDs: 139:06] [JV] A very respectable and in many ways enjoyable production.

Ferruccio BUSONI (1866-1924) Orchestral Works - John Bradbury (clarinet) Nelson Goerner (piano) BBC Philharmonic/Neeme Järvi rec. 2001/4 CHANDOS CHAN241-57 [69:54 + 64:34] [RB] This is first class value for money - no compromise, premium price music-making at 2-4-1 pricing.

Gaetano DONIZETTI (1797-1848) Rosmonda d’Inghilterra - Jessica Pratt, Eva Mei (sopranos) Dario Schmunck (tenor) O Donizetti Opera/Sebastiano Rolli rec. 2016 DYNAMIC CDS7757.02 [2 CDs: 144:10] [GF] A very well-sung performance with lots of wonderful music, and except for a rather mediocre Enrico, it should appeal to all Donizetti lovers.

Gaetano DONIZETTI (1797-1848) Rosmonda d’Inghilterra - Jessica Pratt, Eva Mei (sopranos) Dario Schmunck (tenor) O Donizetti Opera/Sebastiano Rolli rec. 2016 DYNAMIC 37757 DVD [151 mins] [RJF] This Donizetti work may not have the quality of those that followed, but has the dramatic centre to demand and gets excellent singing and acting in this first filmed performance, after years of neglect.

Anna Wandtke (violin) Violin Soul - The New Art Ens rec. 2015/16 DUX 1318 [51:25] [JW] A rather odd approach to the repertoire from a good, honest young violinist who needs to work out what kind she wants to be.

Warmth Trevor Babb (electric guitars) INNOVA 972 [60:50] [DC] Soft profundity and character with a subtle edge.
