The Manchester Gamba Book Dietmar Berger (viola da gamba) rec. 2011 NAXOS 8.572863-64 [79:12 + 80:02]   [JF]

Characteristically sad, melancholic and reflective.

A Musical Journey - Venice NAXOS 2.110306 [57.02] [RJF]

There is more to Venice than St. Marks, as a trip to some of the islands will confirm, particularly in the case of Murano and its glass-making.

A New Venetian Coronation 1595 Gabrieli Consort and Players/Paul McCreesh rec. 2012 SIGNUM SIGCD287 [73:55] [MS]

A highly engaging significantly updated reprise of the landmark recording in 1990; hard to imagine anyone remaining unmoved.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Nordic Violin Favorites Works by Olsen, Atterberg, Stenhammar, Bull, Halvorsen, Sibelius & Sinding Henning Kraggerud (violin) Dalasinfoniettan/Bjarte Engeset rec. 2011 NAXOS 8.572827 [74:48] [DMcC]

This fabulous recording features lesser known violin repertoire played with a keen advocacy.

Nostalgias Argentinas Piano music of Argentina Mirian Conti (piano) rec. 2012 STEINWAY 30010 [72:42][SA]

Argentinean music does not begin and end with the tango or Ástor Piazzola.

Notes from a Journey Works by Psathas, Harris, Body & Norris Richard Nunns (Māori folk instruments) New Zealand Str Qt ATOLL ACD118 [58:48] [Byz]

On top form, exuding confidence, perspicacity, elegance and empathy.

O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing 18th Century Gallery Hymns Maddy Prior and The Carnival Band, The Mellstock Band REGIS RRC 1338 [62:20] [JW]

Given that one must have some interest in eighteenth century hymn singing, this is clearly a specialist acquisition.

L'Olimpiade, the Opera  Karina Gauvin, Ruth Rosique, Venice Baroque O/Markellos Chryssicos rec. 2011 NAÏVE V 5295 [65:57 + 57:18] [JV]

Despite a few reservations, opera-lovers - and in particular the curious ones - shouldn't miss this release.

The profound, the sublime ... and the frivolous! The Denner Ensemble rec. 2010 DDD DENNER ENSEMBLE 2011 [58:57] [JV]

An impressive debut of The Denner Ensemble.

Quickstep - Brass Band Music of the American Civil War Coates Brass Band/Douglas F Hedwig rec. 2011 MSR CLASSICS MS1422 [58:28] [JS]

Clearly a specialist disc.

Steve Reich - Phase to Face EUROARTS 3058124 [80:00] [DBi]

A key minimalist musician is shown in an irritating main documentary but two excellent bonuses.

SILFRA Hilary Hahn (violin) Hauschka (Volker Bertelmann), (prepared piano) rec. 2011, DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 4790303 [52:00] [DC]

Daring in concept, the result is an accessible and admirable success.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Still Sound Bruce Levingston (piano) rec. 2005/9 SONO LUMINUS DSL-92148 [56:13] [BR]

Levingston holds us spellbound with poetic, even sublime playing in a recital which takes us from 1828 to 2004.

Joan Sutherland - A Portrait rec. 1959/60 REGIS RRC3013 [3 CDs: 172:31] [RH]

By any standards these recordings are amazing.

The Swingle Singers Anthology rec. 1991-94 VIRGIN CLASSICS 9669562 [4 CDs: 218:32] [EM-L]

The magic has worn rather thin.

The Art of Roman Totenberg (violin) WQXR Qt, Dean Sanders, Shizue Sano (piano) rec. 1943-96 ARBITER 159 [76:05 + 76:12] [JW]

Totenberg’s memory is perpetuated so lovingly here.

Ylistaron kirkon urut (The organ of Ylistaro Church) Kalevi Kiviniemi (organ) rec. 2002; reworked for SACD release June 2012. Stereo/multichannel 5.0 FUGA-9340/MKSACD-60 [55:08] [DM]

A very unusual issue, thoughtfully played and beautifully recorded.
