Superbudget £5.99 or less Budget £6-7.99 Medium £8-10.99 Full price £11+ Download

The Medinah Sessions Works by Walton, Strauss, Scriabin, Nielsen, Stravinsly, Weill, Bowles, Martinu, Varese & Rimsky-Korsakov Chicago Pro Musica rec. 1983/8 REFERENCE RECORDINGS RR-2102 [68:15 + 69:16] [RB]

Tangy ensemble works heard in superbly lucid playing and recording technology to match.

The Art of Anna Moffo George Frideric HANDEL (1685 – 1759) Messiah Vincenzo BELLINI (1801 – 1835) La Sonnambula excerpts Giuseppe VERDI (1813 – 1901) Falstaff rec. 1955-59 GALA GL 100.678 [4 CDs: 291:11] [RMo]

Moffo fans tolerant of live, mono 1950s sound will welcome this bargain price issue despite its sonic shortcomings and eclectic content.

Money Power(s) Music Johannes Weiss (tenor) Five Recorder Consort rec. 2010 COVIELLO CLASSICS COV 21105 [59:34] [JV]

A highly entertaining disc, thanks to both music and performance.

Mosaic Works by Lavry, Bloch, Ravel & Dobrowen Orsolya Korcsolán (violin) Judit Kertész (piano) rec. 2009 SOLO MUSICA SM150 [58:05] [OL]

These are faithful, sincere readings, planned and executed with love and thought.

Naxi Music from Lijiang Wang Chaoxin (leizi bili) Dayan Ancient Music Association rec. 1995. DDD NIMBUS NI 5510 [71:36] [Byz]

Naxi music may prove a little too exotic for some but this is the disc to have.

The Organs of the Balearic Islands - Vols 1 & 2 Michal Novenko and Arnau Reynés (organs) rec. 2006 PRIORY PRCD 879 & 1014 [78:37 & 79:46] [JF]

A stimulating memento of these superb instruments.

Pa-Mun (Ripples on Water) - Piano music from Korea Klara Min (piano) rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.572406 [54:48] [Byz]

Nothing must-have or even must-hear about this CD but the music is absorbing in its way.

Per la Vergine Maria Works by Monteverdi, Bencini, Melaini, Soler, Scarlatti & Carissimi Concerto Italiano/Rinaldo Alessandrini rec. 2010, NAIVE OP 30505 [63.31] [GH]

The recording serves only to enhance the music. It allows it to breathe and the performers are well balanced. Worth investing in.

Quartettsatz Works by Wolf, Schoenberg, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Britten, Sibelius & Rachmaninov Quatuor Alfama rec. 2010 FUGA LIBERA FUG582 [56:30] [Byz]

Their intelligence and passion are manifest, as is originality.

Rarities of Piano Music Schloss vor Husum - Vol. 22 rec. 2010 DANACORD DACOCD709 [77:18] [JF]

Not a few of these pieces are miniature masterpieces.

Salzburg Opening Concert 2010 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Piano Concerto 4 Pierre BOULEZ (b. 1925) Notations Anton BRUCKNER (1824-1896) Te Deum Dorothea Röschmann (soprano) Elina Garanča (mezzo) Klaus-Florian Vogt (tenor) René Pape (bass) Vienna PO/Daniel Barenboim rec. 2010 C MAJOR 706904 [85:00] [DM]

Despite some technical issues, this is worth adding to your stash of Blu-Rays.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Elisabeth Schumann Silver Thread of Song rec. 1926 – 1949 EMI CLASSICS ICON 9184802 [6 CDs: 442:01] [GF]

Each track on this well-filled box has something to recommend it. A bargain not to be missed. Should never be out of the catalogues.

Songbook The trebles of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum/Benjamin Nicholas, Helen Porter (piano) Carleton Etherington (organ) rec. 2010 DELPHIAN DCD34097 [66:42] [JQ]

A happy disc.

Songs of Cricket London Quartet, Chris Hatt (piano) Alexander L’Estrange (piano) rec. 2011 SIGNUM SIGCD217 [69:00] [JS]

Overall I found this disc a disappointment.

Songs and Cycles Works by contemporary American women composers Linda McNeil (soprano) Carolyn True (piano) rec. 2008 LEONARDA LE357 [51:20] [Byz]

Not a bad CD: The poetry is generally of good quality and imaginatively set, and there is plenty of variety.

Leopold Stokowski Symphonies by Stravinsky, Hanson, Harris, Hovhaness, Hartmann & Hindemith NBC SO; Symphony of the Air; WDR SO Köln; Saint Louis SO rec. 1943-56 GUILD GHCD 2379/80 [2CDs: 68:48 + 74:35]

Live historic recordings brimming with ardent power and fantasy.

L’Art de Aida Stucki Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Violin Concerto Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) Violin Concerto 2 Aida Stucki (violin) Walter Barylli (violin) Radio-Beromünster Orchestra (Zurich)/Orch ofVienna St Op/ Hermann Scherchen rec. 1949/1953 TAHRA TAH663 [63:53] [JW]

A revealing and attractive disc, of some historical significance.

A Naxos Musical Journey – Switzerland - Visiting the Museo Vela at Ligornetto Music by Chopin Irina Zaritzkaya (piano) dts surround sound NAXOS 2.110538 [58:35] [IL]

Not a majestic tourist tour of Switzerland but a commendable exploration of some remarkable art that deserves greater general recognition.

ˇUna tonadilla nueva! - Baroque Music from Ecuador Ens Villancico/Peter Pontvik rec. 2010 CPO 777568-2 [51:26] [JV]

Anyone who loves Latin American baroque music will greatly enjoy this disc.

Viennese Nights at the BBC Proms The music of Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Franz Lehár and Franz von Suppé Performances conducted by James Loughran, Walter Süsskind and János Fürst rec. 1974-79 ICA CLASSICS ICAD5026 [88:35] [JW]

It’s unruly, it’s uncouth, and it’s decidedly de trop. I quite liked it.

The Virtuoso Quartet Vol. 2 Works by Debussy, Mendelssohn, Dittersdorf & Beethoven Virtuoso Qt rec. 1925/6 HISTORIC RECORDINGS HRCD00087 [65:16] [JW]

Thoughtful listening will tell you that these performances are of genuine distinction.

Winter Sketches Bjarke Mogensen (accordion) rec. 2009/10 ORCHID CLASSICS ORC100015 [63:19] [RB]

Fantasy and nostalgia.
