4 Strings Only: A Recital for Solo Violin Ernest BLOCH (1880-1959) Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) Paul BEN-HAIM (1897-1984) Luciano BERIO (1925-2003) Herwig Zack (violin) rec.2010/2011 AVIE AV2189 [76:38] [AM]

A valuable collection of solo violin works from a very impressive violinist.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Martha Argerich - Solo and two-piano recordings rec. 1965-2009 EMI CLASSICS 0940442 [6 CDs: approx 420:00] [SA]

I cannot imagine any composer from Mozart to Guastavino taking issue with her over interpretations. This is a set any piano music lover will treasure forever and no one will want to be without it once they have it.

The Sound of Martha Argerich Martha Argerich (piano) EMI CLASSICS 0946182 [3 CDs: 214:14] [DC]

Full of good things, but then, so is the EMI Edition.

Capricho Latino Works by Albeniz, Cordero, Serebrier & Ridout Rachel Barton Pine (violin solo) Héctor Elizondo (narrator) rec. 2009-2011 CEDILLE RECORDS CDR 90000 124 [79:38] [JW]

This imaginatively selected programme has been excellently realised.

Claudio Arrau: Virtuoso Philosopher of the Piano rec. 1939-62 EMI CLASSICS ICON 9184322 [12 CDs: c. 15:00:00] [JW]

Central Arrau repertoire in mostly outstanding performances - exceptional value for money.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH In the Beginning Works by Jackson, Weelkes, Palestrina, Whitacre, Holst, Gombert, Lukaszewski & Copland Natasha Tyrwhitt-Drake (organ) Ch Merton College, Oxford/Peter Philips, Benjamin Nicholas rec. 2011 DELPHIAN DCD34072 [69:14] [JQ]

A most auspicious debut on CD for the Merton College Choir.

Beyond All Mortal Dreams - American a cappella Ch Trinity College, Cambridge/Stephen Layton rec. 2010 HYPERION CDA67832 [68:33] [WH]

Gorgeous, approachable contemporary American choral music, superbly performed and recorded.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Capricho Latino Rachel Barton-Pine (violin) rec. 2009-11 CEDILLE RECORDS CDR 90000124 [79:38] [NB]

Even by Barton-Pine’s formidable standards this is of staggering quality.

Arthur Catterall - Volume 4 Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Violin Sonata 3 Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Sonata for piano and violin in A, K526 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Violin Sonata in F Spring Arthur Catterall (violin) William Murdoch (piano) Hamilton Harty (piano) rec. 1923 HISTORIC RECORDINGS HRMP00117 [51:41] [JW]

Catterall was a fine player, and these restorations demonstrate the point.

Classic Film Scores for Errol Flynn Erich Wolfgang KORNGOLD (1897-1957) The Sea Hawk, The Adventures of Robin Hood Max STEINER (1888-1971) The Adventures of Don Juan, They Died With Their Boots On, Dodge City Nat PO/Charles Gerhardt rec. 1975 SONY RCA RED SEAL 88697 779342 [56:10] [IL]

Another ‘Classical Film Score’ winner with some of Korngold’s best music. The remastered sound is terrific.

Classic Film Scores for Bette Davis - Music by Steiner, Korngold, Newman and Waxman National PO/Charles Gerhardt rec. 1973 SONY/RCA RED SEAL 88697 812722 [41:00] [IL]

Nicely unrestrained readings of these powerfully emotional, melodramatic scores.

Alfred Deller - Three Ravens — Folksongs Alfred Deller (counter-tenor) Desmond Dupré (lute and guitar) rec. 1956 Texts included ALTO ALC 1148 [74:13] [JW]

This is simply great artistry.

English Violin Sonatas Thomas DUNHILL (1877-1946) Violin Sonata in F op.50 (1918) [29:47] Granville BANTOCK (1868-1946) Violin Sonata no.3 in C (1940) [19:53] Charles Villiers STANFORD (1852-1924) Violin Sonata no.1 in D op.11 (1880) [24:59]
Susanne Stanzeleit (violin), Gusztáv Fenyò (piano) rec. 1994 REGIS RRC1376 [75:34] [CH]

The Dunhill is a wonderful discovery and the Stanford is the best of the two performances now available.

Entertaining Miss Austen - Newly discovered music from Jane Austen’s family collection Amanda Pitt (soprano) John Lofthouse (baritone) David Owen Norris (piano) rec. 2009 DUTTON EPOCH CDLX7271 [73:55] [RB]

Austen and music with sprightly and committed performances.

Wilhelm Furtwängler: The Great EMI Recordings EMI CLASSICS 9078782 [21 CDs; over 24 hours] [JW]

An impressive chance to add a cornerstone collection to the shelves.

The Golden Age of Light Music — Light Music While You Work 3 rec. 1943-46 GUILD LIGHT MUSIC GLCD 5186 [78:41] [JW]

When backs were to the wall, Decca got the toes tapping.

Harp Concertos Elias PARISH ALVARS (1808-1849) Harp Concerto Johann Georg ALBRECHTSBERGER (1736-1809) Harp Concerto Camille SAINT-SAËNS (1835-1921) Morceau de Concert Elizabeth Hainen (harp) Bulgarian Ntl RO/Rossen Milanov rec. 2007 AVIE AV 2221 [67:09]

Worth a punt if you love the harp and you’re keen to try something new.

Hamilton Harty - Vol. 2 Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) Orchestral Suite 2 Edouard LALO (1823-1892) Symphonie espagnole Hector BERLIOZ (1803-1869) Le Carnaval romain Overture George Frideric HANDEL (1685-1759) Water Music Suite Leo Strockoff (violin) Hallé Orchestra/Hamilton Harty rec. 1922-24 HISTORIC RECORDINGS HRCD00074 [60:01] [JW]

I’d commend this disc not least for the first ever restoration of the Lalo.

Richard Lewis – The Great Welsh Tenor George Frederick HANDEL (1685-1759) Arias and recitatives Arne DORUMSGAARD (1921-2006) Arrangements of folksongs London SO/Sir Malcolm Sargent Ch O/Sir Charles Mackerras Tina Bonifacio (harp) rec. 1958/1960 REGIS RRC1375 [79:33] [JS]

A wholly pleasurable experience for those with debased taste and a sweet tooth.
