Musical London, c. 1700 Philippa Hyde (soprano) The Parley of Instruments/Peter Holman rec. 2010 CHANDOS CHACONNE CHAN0776 [75:47] [BW]

Will appeal strongly to a limited audience.

Polish Popular Music from the 17th Century Dances and Songs from the ‘Polcoki Manuscript’ Greensleaves rec. 2009 CHESTNUT HALL MUSIC CHM091115 [78.32] [GH]

Enjoyable and extremely generous …. everything is colourfully and neatly played and exquisitely recorded.

Russian Music for Cello and Piano Nikolai MIASKOVSKY (1881-1950) Cello Sonata 2 Sergei RACHANINOV (1873-1943) Cello Sonata Wendy Warner (cello); Irina Nuzova (piano) rec. 2008 CEDILLE CDR 90000 120 [68:49] [BR]

A deeply felt recital of a Russian favorite and some works which deserve better renown.

Russian Orthodox Chant Odessa Seminary Ch/Priest Mikhailo Davydov rec. 1985/94 ALTO ALC 1110 [74:23] Alexandr Tikhonovich GRECHANINOV (1864-1956) Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom 4 Cantus Sacred Music Ensemble/Ludmila Arshavskaya rec. 1994 ALTO ALC1069 [61:00] [RB]

Rooted deep in Russian Orthodox traditions. Will surely please Grechaninov enthusiasts but the curious generalist would do well to go for the Odessa Seminary disc - a real winner.

Salmon is a Jumpin’ John Salmon (piano) rec. 2009 ALBANY TROY1224 [53:30] [DC]

Good sonics, excellent music and superb playing.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH  Scandinavian Classics - Vol. 3 Edvard GRIEG (1843–1907) Symphonic Dances, Norwegian Dances Harald SÆVERUD (1897–1992) Peer Gynt Jean SIBELIUS (1865–1957) Violin Concerto, Four Lemminkainen Legends Emil Telmányi (violin) Danish State RSO/Erik Tuxen, Thomas Jensen rec. 1949-53 DANACORD DACOCD697-698 [75:46 + 78:26] [BBr]

A well deserved Bravo!, and three cheers to Danacord for making these recordings available once again.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH The Art of Andres Segovia - Vol. 6 rec. 1944-56 IDIS 6603 [56.40] [ZT]

A historical treasure.

Charlie Siem (violin) Works by Wieniawski, Kreisler, Paganini, Waxman, Sarasate & Ponce Caroline Jaya-Ratnam (piano) rec. 2010 WARNER CLASSICS & JAZZ 2564 678047 [47:51] [BR]

Charlie Siem plays well, but not well enough to be humored in his delusion that he is a pop star.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Grigory Sokolov - Live in Paris Grigory Sokolov (pno) rec. 2002 MEDICI ARTS 3073888 [123:02] [CC]

A rare opportunity to savour the art of Grigory Sokolov, that most reclusive of pianists.

Solatino Gabriela Montero (piano) rec. 2010 EMI CLASSICS 6411442 [78:10] [JW]

Languid pastoral, chordally propulsive, rhythmically lively, colour-conscious and warmly textured.

Songs of Sunshine Wells Cathedral Ch, & School CO/Matthew Owens rec. 2010 REGENT REGCD343 [72:57] [JQ]

A highly enjoyable and very well performed programme

A Song without Words - the legacy of Paul Taffanel  Kenneth Smith (flute) Paul Rhodes (piano)  rec. 2008/9  DIVINE ART DDA21371 [3 CDs: 242:36]  [CR]

Kenneth Smith’s wonderful tone and range of colours is the highlight of the recording

Sospiri Cecillia Bartoli (mezzo) rec. 1994-2009 DECCA 478 2558 [72:26] [RJF]

An interesting collection of Cecilia Bartoli’s diverse recorded repertoire over the last sixteen years

Strings in the Earth and Air Paul Martyn-West (tenor) Nigel Foster (piano) rec. 2005 DIVERSIONS DDV24152 [68:37] [JW]

An engaging recital that should find a receptive audience among lovers of British song.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Joan Sutherland - The Legendary Debut Recital Arias by Donizetti, Verdi & Handel Paris Conservatoire O/Nello Santi, Philomusica of London/Sir Anthony Lewis rec. 1959 REGIS RRC1364 [63:09] [JS]

An immense success, the first of many, and it remains an astonishing achievement.

Joan Sutherland - Classic Australian Performances Elizabethan Sydney O/Richard Bonynge ABC CLASSICS 476 3963 [78:26 + 73:10] [GF]

Live recordings from the last fifteen years of her career amply demonstrate her strengths as well as her weaknesses.

César Vezzani (tenor) Arias rec.1912–25 NIMBUS PRIMA VOCE NI7926 [79:13] [RMo]

Sung with dedication and artistry. I urge every lover of great tenor singing to buy this disc.

Violino o cornetto - 17th Century Italian Solo Sonatas Theresa Caudle (violin and cornett) Canzona rec. 2008 NIMBUS NI 6134 [73:34] [JW]

An investigative recital of great persuasive power and real spirit.

The World of Ballet Paris Conservatoire O, New SO, Royal Opera House O/Anatole Fistoulari rec. 1953-58 DECCA ELOQUENCE 480 2391 [70:26 + 63:13] [JS]

Enjoyable yet hardly compelling.

Yo m’enamorí d’un aire - Medieval Songs and Dances Reval’s Troubadours rec. 2010 EMEC E-090 [73:57] [GH]

The singers are both passionate and expressive with wide dynamic contrasts and clear diction.
