[Part 1 New] [Part 2 A-B] [Part 3 C-L]
[Part 4 M-R] [Part 5 S-Z]
[Part 6 Misc A-L] [Part 7 Misc M-Z]
[last 5 days] [Recommended recordings]

Malagueña Works for piano duo by Grainger, Brubeck, Lutoslawski, Lecuona & others Duo Granat rec. 2011 DUX 0860 [62:48] [JW]

Enjoyment and amusement along the way.

Metsän poika On the Fields of Tapiola Jorma Hynninen (baritone) Ostrobothnian CO/Juha Kangas rec. 1912 ALBA ABCD 348 [62:39] [GF]

A worthy terminus to an unprecedented artistic and recording career.

Music in the Air A History of Classical Music on Television A Film by Reiner E. Moritz ARTHAUS MUSIK 101 640 [85:00] [JW]

Relive some of the glory days.

Nordic Violin Music Tor AULIN (1866-1914) Four Aquarelles Christian SINDING (1856-1941) Romanze Bengt CARLSON (1890-1953) Violin Sonata Annemarie Åström (violin) Sonja Fräki, Emil Holmström (piano) rec. 2010 ALBA ABCD 347 [62:01] [JW]

A good balance between the known and the unknown.

Cecilio Perera (guitar) Works by Ponce, Brouwer, Sojo & Oliva rec. 2012 NAXOS 8.573025 [68:37] [BR]

The combination of faux-baroque music, Venezuelan love ballads, and four big-hearted tributes to the tango is irresistible.

Recorder Bravura Transcriptions for Recorder and Piano in the Grand Romantic Style Piers Adams (recorders) Howard Beach (piano) rec. 1997, RED PRIEST RECORDINGS RP011 [67:40] [JW]

An engaging disc for the recorder addict.

The Red Piano Yundi (piano) China NCPA Concert Hall O/Chen Zuohuang rec. 2011 EMI CLASSICS 0886582 [62:11] [JW]

It’s all a long, long way from Chopin.

Romantische Sinfonien rec. 1961-88 BERLIN CLASSICS 0300491BC [5 CDs: 374:15] [Byz]

There are worse places to start a collection.

Arp-Schnitger-Orgel Norden - Vol. 3 Agnes Luchterhandt, Thiemo Janssen (organ) rec. 2011 MUSIKPRODUKTION DABRINGHAUS UND GRIMM 906 1753-6 [77:45] [JV]

Organ aficionados will love this disc just as much as the previous volumes.

Karel Šejna: Great Czech Conductors Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Symphony 38 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphony 6 Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Symphony 8 Gustav MAHLER (1860-1911) Symphony 4 Maria Tauberová (soprano) Czech PO rec. 1950-62 SUPRAPHON SU4081-2 [70:31 + 75:20] [JQ]

Karel Šejna may have been largely a “Second-in-Command” but the recordings in this set show that there was nothing second rate about his conducting.

Shine and Shade English twentieth century recorder music Piers Adams (recorders) Julian Rhodes (piano) rec. 1993 RED PRIEST RP010 [69:47] [JW]

A winning recital, performed with brio and technical assurance and captured in good sound.

Leonard Shure in concert at Jordan Hall Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Piano Sonata 2, Ballade 1, Preludes Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Phantasien Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Fantasie rec. 1977-80 BRIDGE 9374A/B [49:30 + 48:41] [JW]

A useful release.

Songs and Dances of Bohemian Baroque Musica Bohemia/Jaroslav Krček rec. 1989/1995 SUPRAPHON SU 4098-2 [75:57 + 72:53] [JW]

Plenty of variety, and panache.

The Trio Sonata in 18th-Century England London Baroque rec. 2009 BIS CD-1765 [70:58] [JV]

Another very fine release in London Baroque's series devoted to the trio sonata.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Verwandlung Songs of a year Christiane Karg (soprano) Burkhard Kehring (piano) rec. 2009 BERLIN CLASSICS 0016762BC [59.05] [MMB]

I am a fervent admirer of Ms Karg’s artistry.

Violin My Love Hommage a Váša Príhoda Tomáš Vinklát (violin) Martin Fila (piano) rec. 2011 ARCO DIVA UP 0153 - 2131 [59:10] [Byz]

A pleasing disc though I wish the performers had been more expressively engaged.

Von ewiger Liebe Johannes BRAHMS (1833 - 1897) Zigeunerlieder Gustav MAHLER (1860 - 1911) Five Rückert Songs Alban BERG (1885 - 1935) Seven Early Songs Ayelet Amots-Avramson (mezzo) Jonathan Zak (piano) ROMEO RECORDS 7288 [70:10] [GF]

Some vocal deficiencies but the readings are expressive and nuanced. I derived a lot of pleasure from this programme.

Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra 10th Anniversary Concert - Works by Bach, Mozart, Tchaikovsky & Lukaszewski Ilya Gringolts (violin) Aleksandra Rojek-Duda (oboe) Warsaw Ph CO rec. 2011 CD ACCORD ACD 174-2 [76:18] [BR]

For however many of us die-hard Warsaw Philharmonic fans there are in the world (not enough!), this album is a delight.

With Strings Attached San Francisco Choral Artists/Magen Solomon, Alexander String Qt rec. 2012 FOGHORN CLASSICS CD2006 [68:55] [OL]

Beautiful and diverse, thought-provoking and heartwarming.

Other Reviews (posted on the second Monday of the month)

That Old Arlen Magic RETROSPECTIVE RTS 4206 [77:34 + 78:38] [BMcC]

Arlen was one of the most prolific popular composers of the twentieth century.

The Golden Age of Light Music - Melody Mixture rec.1947-61 GUILD LIGHT MUSIC GLCD5197 [70:20] [JW]

No overarching theme, just a selection of good tunes.

A Musical Journey - Burgundy, Pays de la Loire, Franche-Comte NAXOS 2.110298 [52.47] [RJF]

Plenty to see, and music to enjoy, in this geographically wide-ranging visit to France.

A Musical Journey - Andalusia, Sitges, Seville and Granada NAXOS 2.110310 [55.14] [RJF]

Even more frustrating than usual in what is omitted picture-wise. How can one visit Granada and not show its setting or the Alhambra Palace?

A Musical Journey - Madrid, La Mancha and Córdoba NAXOS 2.110308 [52.45] [RJF]

A well-documented and interesting journey with much to ravish the ear and interest the eye.

William Vincent Wallace: Music Album 1854 (limited edition) Úna Hunt and Peter Jaggard Published by RTE, Dublin [RJW]

What could be a nicer way of celebrating the bicentenary of this important yet forgotten composer.
