An Anthology of Finnish Piano Music - Volume 2 Jouni Somero (piano) rec. 2005 FINNCONCERT FCRCD 9713 [75:12] [Byz]

Timeless, evocative lyricism, intimacy and sheer beautiful melody, Somero's recital is a corker.

Arctic Scenes Timo KURKI (b. 1953) Kulnasadž vaatimeni (Kulnasadž, My Reindeer) (1977) [4:06] Tuulikki NÄRHINSALO (b. 1945) Lapin tytön laulu (Lappish Girl’s Song) (1983) [1:54] Jukka KANKAINEN (b. 1932) Lauluja Lapista (Songs of Lapland) (1981) [7:42] trad. arr. An unusual and highly attractive programme of choral music from Lapland.

Contrechant Works by Berio, Holliger, Sciarrino, Carter, Eötvös & Vadja Reto Bieri (clarinet) rec. 2010 ECM NEW SERIES 2209 [51:21] [Byz]

Likely to appeal only to those with adventurous spirits or a special interest in the clarinet.

Birth of the String Quartet - Vol. 2 Works by Telemann, Guillemain, Haydn & Mozart Casal Qt rec. 2009 SOLO MUSICA SM143 [61:42] [MC]

I enjoyed greatly and keenly look forward to the third volume.

Cor! Alison Teale (cor anglais) Elizabeth Burley (piano) rec. 2010 OBOE CLASSICS CC2023 [76:27] [RB]

A virtuoso of the instrument – excitement and poetry.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Dances to a Black Pipe Aaron COPLAND (1900-1990) Clarinet Concerto Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Hungarian Dances Nos. 12, 13, 1 and 21 (arr. Göran Fröst) Witold LUTOSLAWSKI (1913-1994) Dance Preludes Anders HILLBORG (1954-) Peacock Tales Fredrik HÖGBERG (1971-) Dancing with Silent Purpose Martin Fröst (clarinet) Australian Ch O/Richard Tognetti rec. 2011 BIS SACD 1863 [81:31] [BR]

This is a real treat: the incomparable Martin Fröst does jazz, klezmer, tango, and techno.

Density 21.5 Andy Findon (flute, alto flute, piccolo, baritone saxophone), rec. 2011 NIMBUS ALLIANCE NI 6157 [66:45] [CR]

An impressive disc … Worth exploring.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Emanuel Ensemble Works for flute, cello & piano by Kapustin, Gaubert, Schumann, Borne, Farrenc & Piazzolla rec. 2010/11 CHAMPS HILL RECORDS CHRCD023 [75:37] [BR]

You’ve probably never heard much of this music, and you’re sure to love all of it.

English Classics Hallé O/Mark Elder, John Wilson rec. 2002-2010 HALLÉ CDHLD7532 [4 CDs: 62:47 + 71:40 + 74:30 + 69:12] [JQ]

An outstandingly generous compilation of English music

English Spring Arnold BAX (1883-1953) Spring Fire Frederick DELIUS (1862-1934) Idylle de Printemps, The March of Spring Frank BRIDGE (1879-1941) Enter Spring (1927) [20:50] The Halle/Sir Mark Elder rec. 2010 HALLE CD HLL 7528 [74:30] [JQ]

A marvellous disc of unjustly neglected English music, superbly played.

Ferveur et Extase Stéphanie d'Oustrac (mezzo) Amarillis/Héloïse Gaillard, Violaine Cochard rec. 2010 AMBRONAY AMY027 [64:18] [JV]

In previous recordings Stéphanie d'Oustrac has shown her dramatic qualities, and they shine here again.

A Fool for Love Michael Spyres (tenor) Moscow CO/Constantine Orbelian rec. 2010 DELOS DE 3414 [63:04] [RMo]

Spyres has a particularly charming, small, light, well-schooled voice with an attractive fast vibrato and a honeyed, floating line.

This Invisible World Wissam Boustany (flute), Aleksander Szram (piano) rec. 2011 NIMBUS ALLIANCE NI 6170/1 [58:50 + 63:40][CR]

Overall a fascinating disc with much to offer in terms of repertoire and musicianship.

Purity and reverence.
