All the Queen’s Men - Music for Elizabeth I The Sarum Consort/Andrew Mackay rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.572582 [50:41] [GH]

A good place from which to begin your journey of exploration.

Maurice André Edition - Volume 4 Suites, Dances and Arrangements Maurice André (trumpet) rec. 1963-82 WARNER CLASSICS 2564 67606-2 [6 CDs: 469:16] [JW]

For those broad of mind, light of heart, and promiscuously admiring of the venerable French trumpeter.

Martha Argerich - The Collection 4, complete Philips recordings Works by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Saint-Saens, Schubert rec. 1977-1987 DECCA 478 2746 [6 CDs: 72:40 + 62:17 + 53:09 + 36:49 + 49:13 + 43:03] [DC]

Deserves a place in anyone’s collection – classic in every sense.

Art Songs of the British Romantics Songs by Bridge, Elgar, Quilter and Vaughan Williams Stanley Wilson (tenor) Malcolm Halliday (piano) rec. 2010 MSR CLASSICS MS1377 [54:00] [NB]

The repertoire chosen here is a delight ... in other hands.

Harold Bauer The Great Pianists - Volume 13: Masters of the Piano Roll series Harold Bauer (piano) rec. 1916-29 DAL SEGNO DSPRCD053 [73:06] [JW]

This disc augments Bauer’s discography therefore, albeit tentatively.

British Ballet Music Arthur SULLIVAN (1842-1900) Pineapple Poll Arthur BLISS (1891-1975) Checkmate William WALTON (1902-1983) Façade Edward ELGAR (1857-1934) Enigma Variations Gavin GORDON (1901-1970) The Rake’s Progress – Sarabande and Orgy Gustav HOLST (1874-1934) The Perfect Fool Royal PO/Charles Mackerras, Ch & O Royal Opera House, Covent Garden/Robert Irving, Royal Liverpool PO/Vernon Handley, City of Birmingham SO/Louis Frémaux, London SO/Adrian Boult/André Previn rec. 1956-78 EMI CLASSICS 9498192 [76:58 + 75:12] [JW]

An attractive compilation.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH The British Symphonic Collection various orchestras/Douglas Bostock rec. 1998-2005 MEMBRAN 233316 [10 CDs: ca 12 hrs] [RB]

An adventurous conspectus that is nothing if not enterprising and the price is right - in fact irresistible even for timid risk-takers.

Gré Brouwenstijn Operatic Arias Gré Brouwenstijn (soprano) Hague PO/Willem van Otterloo; Vienna SO, Vienna Cathedral O/Rudolf Moralt rec. 1952/6 NEWTON CLASSICS 8802061 [70:00] [RMo]

This is not a disc I shall return to often but Brouwenstjin fans will want this new issue as she did not make that many recordings.

Un camino de Santiago Arianna Savall (soprano) Ensemble La Fenice rec. 2010 RICERCAR RIC312 [63:40] [JV]

This imaginary journey through Europe has resulted in an entertaining and musically compelling programme of mostly little-known music, fit for repeated listening.

Candlemas in Renaissance Rome Works by Arcadelt, Palestrina & de Silva Musica Contexta/Simon Ravens, English Cornett and Sackbut Ens rec. 2010 CHANDOS CHACONNE CHAN0779 [68:14] [DC]

With excellent performances and a fine recording this comes with a warm stamp of approval.

Casals Encores Alban Gerhardt (cello) Cecile Licad (piano) rec. 2010 HYPERION CDA67831 [72:41]  [GA]

Gerhardt and Licad play this repertoire with feeling that never degenerates into sentiment.

Classical Accordion Arne NORDHEIM, Johann Sebastian BACH, Luciano BERIO, Domenico SCARLATTI, Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART, Alfred SCHNITTKE, Yuji TAKAHASHI, Ástor PIAZZOLLA Ksenija Sidorova (accordion) +Sacconi Quartet rec. 2010/1 CHAMPS HILL RECORDS CHRCD 019 [68:30] [Byz]

An alluring disc that offers a fine introduction to Sidorova's already beautifully toned musicianship.

Climate Changes CD [54:24]: Francis POULENC (1899-1963) Sonata for Cello and Piano [22:52] Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Sonata for Cello and Piano [11:24] Jacqueline FONTYN (b.1930) Six Climats [11:21] Olivier MESSIAEN (1908-1992) Louange à l'Éternité de Jésus from Quatuor pour la Fin du Temps [8:47] DVD [40:11]: Documentary [24:12] Claude DEBUSSY Sonata for Cello and Piano [11:06] Rehearsal of the Poulenc Sonata for Cello and Piano [4:53] Jan Pas (cello) Stefano Vismara (piano) rec. 2008, EVIL PENGUIN RECORDS EPRC 009 [54:24+40:11] [AM]

Good, rather than great, performances coupled with an imaginative introduction to the artists.

Dancing in the Isles Works by Byrd, Farnaby, Johnson, Oswald, Locke, Veracini. Matteis & Purcell Musica Pacifica rec. 2008 SOLIMAR 101 CD [74:58] [JS]

An interesting and companionable disc.

Enfield Connections Enfield Citadel Band/Jonathan Corry rec. 2010 SP&S 284CD [70:51] [Byz]

The finest work on the disc and by a long stretch is the Gregson's Variations.

The Excellent Art of Voluntary Robert Costin (organ) rec. Pembroke College, Cambridge UK, dates not given ATOLL ACD241 [73:28] [CH]

Well-prepared, idiomatic performances.

Mojca Erdmann (soprano) - Mostly Mozart La Cetra/Andrea Marcon rec. 2010 DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON 477 8979 [70:32] [GF]

A treasure trove from more than one point of view.

Fantasies and Impromptus Lavinia Meijer (harp) rec. 2010 CHANNEL CLASSICS CCSSA31711 [72:04] [DM]

I’m delighted with this new disc.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Mirella Freni - Great Singers Live Arias by Cilea, Puccini, Bizet, Massenet, Verdi, Mozart & Tchaikovsky Munich RSO/Kurt Eichhorn,Vladimir Ghiaurov rec. 1971-87 BR KLASSIK 900303 [59:42] [MC]

I just couldn’t stop playing this disc which is not surprising given that Freni has one of the finest soprano voices I have ever heard.

Ignaz Friedman The Great Pianists Volume 14: Masters of the Piano Roll Series rec. c. 1921-26 DAL SEGNO DSPRCD 054 [73:33] [JW]

Only intermittently convincing.

Paul Galbraith (guitar) Works by Mozart, Britten, Bach, Albéniz & Ravel rec. 2007 MASHULKA PRODUCTIONS [74:00] [KM]

An attractive guitar recital from a fine performer, on a unique instrument.

The Glory of Ely Cathedral Edward ELGAR, Frank BRIDGE, Charles Villiers STANFORD, Edward BAIRSTOW, Thomas Tertius NOBLE, Marcel DUPRE, Alexander GLAZUNOV Choir of Ely Cathedral ; Jeremy Filsell (organ) ; Paul Trepte (organ) and (conductor) (4)
rec. 1991,1992 HERITAGE HTGCD 219 [73.31] [RH]

A slightly awkward mix but highly attractive and intelligently and finely performed.

The Golden Age of Light Music Confetti rec. 1949-59 GUILD LIGHT MUSIC GLCD5175 [78:04] [JW]

Another ingeniously compiled selection, giving as ever great value for money.

The Golden Age of Light Music - Portrait Of My Love rec. 1953-1960 GUILD LIGHT MUSIC GLCD 5179 [79:07] [JW]

Lots of interesting music here. Good stuff for lovers one and all.

Susan Graham French Songs – Live at the Verbier Festival Susan Graham (mezzo) Malcolm Martineau (piano) rec. 2009. IDEALE AUDIENCE 3079128 [60:02] [WH]

A most satisfying recital of French song from the Verbier Festival.

Hear, O Heav’ns: Chapel Royal Anthems John BLOW (1649-1708) Henry PURCELL (1659-1695) Matthew LOCKE (1622-1677) Pelham HUMPHREY (?1647-1674) Andrew Olleson (counter-tenor); Andrew Carwood (tenor); William Clements (bass); Robert MacDonald (bass); Stephen Farr (organ) Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford/Stephen Darlington rec. 1995. DDD. NIMBUS NI5454 [74:27] [JW]

A most enjoyably and intelligently conceived disc.

It is Time Choral works by Shapiro, Smith, Fowler, Havrøy, Karkoshka & Broberg The Crossing/Donald Nally NAVONA NV5845 [64:53] [JS]

Most certainly a demonstration of some very impressive and committed singing.

Carlos Kleiber - I am lost to the world Directed by Georg Wübbolt C MAJOR 705608 [58:32] [JW]

This documentary raises more questions than answers.
