Arbitrio Music for oboe, bassoon & piano by Munn, Hoddinott, Weait, Lipp & Glinka Arbitrio rec. 2000/4 CENTAUR CRC 3013 [54:03] [BBr]

Most of the music simply isn’t interesting.

Blame Not My Lute - Elizabethan Lute Music and Poetry Ronn McFarlane (lute) Robert Aubry Davis (speaker) rec. 2009 DORIAN SONO LUMINUS DSL-92105 [50:36] [JW]

Cleverly programmed but not for me

British Music for Cello and Piano William WORDSWORTH (1908-1988) Cello sonatas 1 & 2 Josef HOLBROOKE (1878-1958) Fantasie-Sonata William BUSCH (1901-1945) Suite, Elegy Raphael Wallfisch (cello); Raphael Terroni (piano) rec. 2008/10 BRITISH MUSIC SOCIETY BMS436CD [75:33] [JF][HC][RB]

These are important composers who ought to be understood, enjoyed and appreciated as a part of the British musical canon. This CD goes far in promoting this ambition.

More Cohler on Clarinet Johannes BRAHMS (1833-1897) Clarinet Sonata Francis POULENC (1899-1963) Clarinet Sonata Robert SCHUMANN (1810-1856) Fantasy Pieces Darius MILHAUD (1892-1974) Sonatina Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Three Pieces Johathan Cohler (clarinet) Randall Hodgkinson (piano) rec. 1993 ONGAKU 024-102 [59:37] [OL]

A good collection played with irresistible enthusiasm, though sometimes too intense.

Plácido Domingo - The First Recital Plácido Domingo (tenor) Deutschen Oper Berlin O/Nello Santi rec. 1968 WARNER CLASSICS 2564 683659 [51:39] [RJF]

Open-toned, virile and expressive singing. Every opera lover should have this recording in their collection.

Duo Macondo Works by Albéniz, Granados, Ruiz-Pipó, Piazzolla & Zemtsov Mikhail Zemtsov (viola), Enno Voorhorst (guitar), rec. 2009, OTTAVO OTR C30973 [65:02] [OL]

Signature music from Spain and Argentina, expertly played, in fine arrangements for an interesting combination of instruments

Eight Visions Works for flute & piano by Rorem, Moravec, Yi, Leon, Beglarian, Sanford, Bunch & Hui Marya Martin (flute); Colette Valentine (piano) rec. 2007 NAXOS 8.559629 [59:46] [CR]

Inspiring work which deserves to be heard.

In Evening Air Piano miniaures by Beethoven, Scriabin, Hanson, Copland, Rorem & Liebermann Carolyn Enger (piano) rec. 2008 Private label [59:18] [OL]

Expressively played. Creates the intimate evening mood. Absolute pleasure.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Kirsten Flagstad - The Supreme Wagnerian Soprano rec. 1923–52 EMI CLASSICS ICON SERIES 4553462 [5 CDs: 377:55] [GF]

The Voice of the Century!

Ghosts: Solos and Duets rec. 2003-8 BEAUPORT CLASSICS BC2907 [61:03] [CR]

These efforts deserve to be rewarded, and I hope this music will be heard.

The Golden Age of Light Music – Magical Melodies rec. 1942-1959 GUILD LIGHT MUSIC GLCD 5170 [78:23] [JW]

The big name boys are here.

The Golden Age of Light Music: A First A-Z of Light Music rec. 1938-58 GUILD GLCD 5169 [79:15] [BBr]

They keep making them this good.

The Great Spanish Pianists: The Original Piano Roll Recordings Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla, Paquita Segovia, Guiomar Novaes, Rudolf Ganz rec. 1908-33 DAL SEGNO DSPRCD037 [70:35] [BR]

Three Spanish composers play their own music in a piano-roll treasure trove.

Hommage à Bidú Sayão Bidú Sayão (soprano) CEMBAL D'AMOUR CD144 [75:06] [JW]

A fine start to the Sayão series: variety and allure, well transferred.

Herbert von Karajan: Berliner Philharmoniker, Tokyo - 1957 Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg Prelude Richard STRAUSS (1864-1949) Don Juan Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphony 5 Berlin PO/Herbert von Karajan rec. 1957 DYNAMIC 33644 [57:51] [RMay]

I enjoyed this more than any other account of the Fifth that I have heard Karajan conduct.

Karajan in New York - Vol. 1 & 2 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) Symphonies 1 & 9 Anton von WEBERN (1883–1945) Fünf Sätze Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1757 – 1781) Symphony 41 New York PO/Herbert von Karajan rec. 1958 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC 222/224 [66:35 + 63:05] [BBr]

Well done, Pristine Audio!
