We are fortunate to have such an exemplary production ... one of the most important musical discoveries and revelations of the Twenty-First Century. [JF] Rangy and gangly music quaffing deep from the authentic Caledonian aquifer. [RB]

A strong performance …an eclectic musical style and a rather distinctive solution to creating a music-theatre piece.

Gaetano DONIZETTI (1797 – 1848) Marino Faliero Giorgio Surian, Rachele Stanisci, Ivan Magri, Ch & O Bergamo Musica Festival Gaetano Donizetti/Bruno Cinquegrani rec. 2008 NAXOS 2.110616-17 [73:27 + 78.47] [RMK]

Thoughtful, well-considered and deeply musical accounts of Elgar’s symphonies, even if they are not first choices.

George ENESCU (1881-1955) Piano Quartets 1 & 2 Schubert Ens Simon Blendis (violin) Douglas Paterson (viola) Jane Salmon (cello) William Howard (piano) rec. 2010/11 CHANDOS CHAN 10672 [67:00] [GD]

Good opportunities to get acquainted with various aspects of Fasch's oeuvre, with music by two contemporaries as bonuses.

Johann Joseph FUX (1660-1741) Partite a 3 Ars Antiqua Austria rec. 2010 CHALLENGE CLASSICS CC72381 [68:12] [JV]

Highly enjoyable disc with largely-ignored instrumental music by Fux.

Return to this with pleasure.

George Frideric HANDEL (1685–1759) Orlando Patricia Bardon (mezzo) Rosa Mannion (soprano) Harry van der Kamp (bass) Les Arts Florissants/William Christie rec. 1996 WARNER CLASSICS 2564 67743-0 [3 CDs: 65:00 + 51:34 + 52:13] [GF]

I was deeply impressed by William Christie and his colleagues and at Warner’s new price it’s worth anyone’s money.

George Frideric HANDEL (1685-1759) Ariodante Joyce DiDonato, Matthew Brook, Karina Gauvin, Topi Lehtipuu, Il Complesso Barocco/Alan Curtis rec. 2010 VIRGIN CLASSICS 0708442 [3 CDs: 192:59] [JW]

This new set has real advantages.

Jonathan HARVEY (b. 1939) The Angels, Ashes Dance Back, Marahi, The Summer’s Cloud’s awakening Jonathan Harvey (electronics) Latvian Radio Ch/James Wood, Kaspars Putnins rec. 2005/8 HYPERION CDA67835 [63.43] [GH]

There are some significant and fascinating pieces here. The recording is ideal and the performances committed and, seemingly, flawless.

Franz Josef HAYDN (1732-1809) Salve Regina Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Coronation Mass London Mozart Players/Harry Blech rec. 1953/4 FORGOTTEN RECORDS FR390 [46:42] [CC]

This is a tremendous coupling. The very name “London Mozart Players” will, I am sure, conjure up fond memories for many users of this site.

Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Symphony 85 Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Symphonies 3 & 5 Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Hamburg CO/Georg Ludwig Jochum rec. 1954/9 FORGOTTEN RECORDS FR531 [68:11] [CH]

I certainly didn’t get the impression that the Jochum brothers’ reputations should be reversed. But it’s quite an enjoyable peep into the past.

Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Symphony 98 Anton BRUCKNER (1824-1896) Symphony 7 Boston SO/Charles Munch rec. 1958/60 ICA CLASSICS ICAD5028 [82:32] [CH]

The Haydn is mainly cherishable. The Bruckner sounds as it were chosen deliberately to harm Munch’s reputation.

A set well worth considering, as much for the extras as for the main work.

John IRELAND (1879-1962) & Grayston IVES (b.1948) Organ works Myles Hartley (organ) rec. 2010 PRIORY PRCD1054 [72:12] [Byz]

Mieczyslaw KARLOWICZ (1876-1909) Rebirth Symphony, The White Dove Warsaw PO/Antoni Wit rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.572487 [62:32] [WH]

A new name? Don’t hesitate: these are wonderfully satisfying performances of striking music.
