All Shall be Well Exultate Singers/David Ogden rec. 2011 NAXOS 8.572760 [61:11] [JQ]

A very good choir in an enterprising programme.

Baroque Bohemia and Beyond VI Christoph SCHIMPKE (1725-1789) Sinfonia in F [21:54] Leopold Florian GASSMANN (1729-1774) Symphony in C minor [23:33] Vojtech JÍROVEC (1763-1850) Symphony in F major [26:22] Czech Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra/Petr Chromcák rec. 2012 ALTO ALC 1201 [72:03][JW]

Pleasingly lilting lyricism … well worth a listen.

Sir Adrian Boult: from Bach to Wagner London PO, Philharmonia O, New Philh O, London SO EMI CLASSICS 6356572 [11CDs: c.12:30:00] [ST]

Broadens our understanding of Boult’s conducting vision. I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

British Works for Cello and Piano Vol. 1 by Parry, Delius, Foulds & Bantock Paul Watkins (cello) Huw Watkins (piano) rec. 2012 CHANDOS CHAN10741 [69:58] [MC]

Lovers of British chamber music will want to own this release.

Sergiu Celibidache In Rehearsal and Performance Munich PO, Stuttgart RSO rec. 1965/1982 EUROARTS 205 9118 [5 DVDs] [JW]

Admirers will find much to interest them.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH British Clarinet Concertos Charles Villiers STANFORD (1852-1924) Clarinet Concerto Gerald FINZI (1901-1956) Clarinet Concerto Malcolm ARNOLD (1921-2006) Clarinet Concerto 2 BBC SO/Michael Collins (clarinet) rec. 2012 CHANDOS CHAN10739 [65:45] [NB]

Collins’ finest recording to date and one of the finest concerto discs of the year.

Choruses for Male Voices and Orchestra Works by Bruckner, Debussy, Grieg, Schubert, Sibelius, R Strauss & Wagner Lund Student Singers Malmö Opera O/Alberto Hold-Garrido rec. 2011 NAXOS 8.572871 [61.54] [PCG]

A mixed bag, some superb things here, a real treat in store.

Classical Music and Cold War Musicians in the GDR A film by Thomas Zintl ARTHAUS 101655 [52:00] [ST]

If this story is worth telling - and it surely is - then isn’t it worth taking more time to tell it properly?

Czech Flute Music Erwin SCHULHOFF (1894-1942) Sonata [11:11] Jindrich FELD (1925-2007) Sonata [17:16] Bohuslav MARTINU (1890-1959) Sonata No.1 [18:27] Antonín DVORÁK (1841-1904) Sonatina in G (originally for violin and piano) [18:25] Jeffrey Khaner (flute), Charles Abramovic (piano) rec.1999 AVIE AV2219 [65:15] [SA]

A disc that all can enjoy.

Emma Eames and Pol Plançon Emma Eames (soprano); Pol Plançon (bass) rec.1903 – 1911. ADD NIMBUS PRIMA VOCE NI7860 [71:10] [RMo]

bel canto rules, with the emphasis upon Gallic and Mozartean restraint.

ENCORE! Jouni Somero (piano) rec. 2012. DDD FINNCONCERT FCRCD 9745 [75:11] [Byz]

A generously proportioned CD of widely appealing music well played by Somero and very professionally recorded.

English Town Hall Organ - Philharmonie Duisburg Music by Franck, Holst & Vierne Roland Maria Stangier (organ) rec. 2010 ACOUSENCE RECORDS ACO-CD 10710 [77:54] [HP-R]

The organ is the real star of this recording.

Kathleen Ferrier When the voice finds wings to fly rec. 1946-52 DOCUMENTS 233590 [10 CDs: 9:40:00] [CF]

The voice ‘says’ it all.

Kirsten Flagstad Edition: The Decca Recitals rec. 1956-59 DECCA 4783930 [10 CDs: 624:43] [EM-L]

A wonderful set with some glorious performances.

The Art of Nance Grant rec. 1970s/1980s MELBA RECORDINGS MR301135-36 [56.42 + 78.07] [RJF]

The Australians did not export all their very best voices to Europe. Here is one who could have become a really big name on another continent, but preferred to stay nearer home and family.

Italian Love Cantatas Works by Bononcini, Lotti, Mancini, D Scarlatti & Vivaldi Silvia Vajente (soprano) Epoca Barocca rec. 2007/8 CPO 777 583-2 [73:00] [JV]

A highly enjoyable release.

The Legacy of Mahler Songs by Mahler, Berg, Britten, Schoenberg & Shostakovich Virpi Räisänen (mezzo) Marita Viitasalo (piano) rec. 2011 ONDINE ODE 1208-2 [53:15] [MC]

Räisänen is very talented and I would like to hear her in an acoustic more flattering to her voice.

Fernando De Lucia Fernando de Lucia (tenor) Celestina Boninsegna (soprano); Josefina Huguet (soprano); Antonio Pini-Corsi (baritone); Maria Galvany (soprano) rec. 1902 – 1909. AAD NIMBUS PRIMA VOCE NI 7911 [78:00] [RMo]

As good and representative a sample of De Lucia’s art as any collector could wish.
