A Meeting Place Medieval and Renaissance music for lute and ud Münir Nurettin Beken (ud) August Denhard (lute) rec. 2010 DORIAN SONO LUMINUS DSL92133 [49:55] [DC]

Delicious and subtle, atmospheric and communicative.

Piano Works by The Mighty Handful Modest MUSSORGSKY (1839-1881) Pictures at an Exhibition [35:26] César CUI (1835-1918) Nocturne in F sharp minor, from Op 22 [6:14] Alexander BORODIN (1822-1887) Scherzo in A flat [3:23] Petite Suite [20:33] Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844-1908) Scherzino in A, from Op 11 [1:09] Romance in A flat, from Op 15 [1:42] Waltz in C sharp, from Op 15 [3:33] Mily BALAKIREV (1837-1910) Islamey, Oriental Fantasy [8:55] Philip Edward Fisher (piano) rec. 2010, CHANDOS CHAN 10676 [80:51] [BR]

A good survey, not your new favorite ‘Pictures’ but the miniatures by Cui, Rimsky-Korsakov and especially Borodin are very good.

Missa Brevis - La Maîtrise de Toulouse André CAPLET (1878-1925) Messe à Trois Voix Kenneth LEIGHTON (1929-1988) Missa Cornelia Léo DELIBES (1836-1891) Messe Brève Benjamin BRITTEN (1913-1976) Missa Brevis Gabriel FAURÉ (1845-1921) Messe Basse La Maîtrise de Toulouse/Mark Opstad William Whitehead (organ) rec. 2010 REGENT REGCD340 [71:11] [WK]

A charming and revelatory disc sung by a dynamite young choir.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Johannes Möller (guitar) Laureate series recital rec. 2010 NAXOS 8.572715 [72:58] [GF]

A must for every guitar aficionado!

Music for Oboe, Horn and Piano Works by Mozart, Blanc, Herzogenberg, Molbe, Balser & Damase Jeremy Polmear (oboe) Stephen Stirling (horn) Richard Saxel (piano) rec. 2010 OBOE CLASSICS CC2022 [68:49] [JW]

Engaging, clever and often quietly memorable.

Operatic Duets for Baritone and Bass - Thomas Hampson and Samuel Ramey Arias by Cimarosa, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi Thomas Hampson (baritone) Samuel Ramey (bass) Münchner Rundfunkorch/Miguel Gómez-Martínez rec. 1997 WARNER APEX TELDEC 2564 67717-2 [73.11] [MMB]

A welcome addition to any operatic collection and to admirers of Hampson’s and Ramey’s artistry alike.

Passé – Il Canto Romantico In Italia Vincenzo FERRONI (1858- 1934); Alfredo D’ASDIA (1871-1949) ; Giovanni SGAMBATTI (1841-1914) ; Giuseppe MARTUCCI (1856-1909) ; Leone SINIGAGLIA (1868-1944) ; Idino DONINI (1891-1959) ; Marco Enrico BOSSI (1861-1925) Elisabetta Paglia (mezzo); Christopher Howell (piano) rec. 2011, Texts and translations included SHEVA SH050 [71:43] [JS]

It may be that more satisfactory performances might endear these songs to the listener, but I have to say that I rather doubt it.

Pure Diva - Tribute to Joan Hammond Cheryl Barker (soprano) Timoty Young (piano) (tr. 9–12) Queensland Symphony Orchestra/Guillaume Tourniaire (tr. 1 – 8) rec. 2010 Sung texts with English translations enclosed MELBA MR301129 [78:45] [GF]

Exquisite tone, expressive phrasing, pianissimo singing and an ability to colour the voice, very satisfying but clouds on the horizon?

Russian Ballet Music Nikolai RIMSKY-KORSAKOV (1844-1908) Scheherazade Aram KHACHATURIAN (1903-1978) Spartacus and Gayaneh Alexander GLAZUNOV (1865-1936) The Seasons Dmitry SHOSTAKOVICH (1906-1975) The Golden Age rec. 1960-2003 EMI CLASSICS 9498242 [77:48 + 79:37] [OL]

A fine collection of imaginative music, in solid, colorful performances.

The Seventeenth-Century Violin Works by Matteis(the elder and the younger), Baltzer, Biber, Westhoff and J. S. Bach Jaap Schröder (violin) rec. 1999 SMEKKLEYSA SMC 5 [66:52] [JV]

A most impressive recital of some fascinating music of quite diverse character.

Vladimir Sofronitsky plays at the Scriabin Museum - Volume 6 Franz SCHUBERT (1797-1828) Piano Sonata 21 Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Mazurkas, Preludes, Waltzes Alexander SCRIABIN (1872-1915) Mazurkas, Waltz Vladimir Sofronitsky (piano) rec. 1956 VISTA VERA VVCD-00224 [78:55] [JW]

A difficult choice for collectors and for others this is too laden with problems.

Klaus Tennstedt: The Great EMI Recordings rec. 1978-1990 EMI CLASSICS 0944332 [14 CDs: 887:00] [RMo]

Tennstedt’s greatness clearly revealed by this set and in any event a superb introduction to some of the cornerstones of the Romantic classical canon.

Tertis Viola Ensemble - Concerto, Fantasy, Blues Georg Philipp TELEMANN (1681-1767) Max von WEINZIERL (1841-1898) York BOWEN (1884-1961) Béla BARTÓK (1881-1945) Astor PIAZZOLLA (1921-1992) Christopher NORTON (b.1953) Tertis Viola Ensemble rec. 2009, OEHMS CLASSICS OC 788 [50:20] [JW]

All played with dextrous skill.

To the Point Jennifer HIGDON (b.1962) To the Point, Andrew RUDIN (b.1939) *Canto di Ritorno Gunther SCHULLER (b.1925) +Concerto da Camera Romeo CASCARINO (1922-2002) Blades of Grass, Jay REISE (b.1950) **The River Within - Violin Concerto *Diane Monroe (violin); **Maria Bachmann (violin); Dorothy Freeman (English horn) Orchestra 2001/James Freeman; +Gunther Schuller rec. 2002 - 2008
INNOVA 745 [73:09] [Byz]

To those that complain that all 21st century music is tuneless, aimless rubbish, this CD says: use your ears ...!

Arturo Toscanini - Gala Concert 1945 Franz Joseph HAYDN (1732-1809) Clock Symphony Ottorino RESPIGHI (1879-1936) Pini di Roma Jean SIBELIUS (1865-1957) The Swan of Tuonela Richard WAGNER (1813-1883) Siegfried’s Funeral March Carl Maria von WEBER (1786-1826) Overture: Euryanthe Philh-SO of New York/Arturo Toscanini rec. 1945 GUILD GHCD 2368 [78:32] [JQ]

A concert that shows Toscanini at his dynamic best and that also reminds us what a fine band the PSONY was in 1945.
