American Choral Music Works by Persichetti, Schuman, Bolcom, Fine & Foss University of Texas Chamber Singers/James Morrow rec. 2007 NAXOS 8.559358 [73:15] [WH]

A superb recital of twentieth-century American choral music.

Barbirolli in New York Works by Elgar, Brahms, Mahler, Holst & Vaughan Williams New York P-SO/Sir John Barbirolli rec. 1959 WEST HILL RADIO ARCHIVES WHRA6033 [4 CDs: 311:44] [JQ]

A souvenir of a great conductor reunited with a great orchestra, which will delight collectors.

Antonii Baryshevskyi (piano) Laureate Series - Works by Scarlatti, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Debussy, Mateos & Stravinsky rec. 2009 NAXOS 8.572573 [78.42] [GH]

A fine and musically well-balanced recital acting as a superb calling-card.

Bassoon concertos by Mozart, Rossini, Kreutzer & Crusell Karen Geoghegan (bassoon) BBC Philharmonic/Gianandrea Noseda rec. 2010 CHANDOS CHAN 10613 [63:43] [JS]

Much to enjoy here … listen to this and marvel at playing of such eloquence.

The Brazilian Cello Camargo GUARNIERI (1907-1993) Sonatas 1-3, Cantilenas 1 & 2, Ponteio and Dança Alberto NEPOMUCENO (1864-1920) Romance, Tarantella Francisco MIGNONE (1897-1986) Modinha João OCTAVIANO (1892-1962) Canto Elegiaco Luiz Henrique LEVY (1861-1935) Romance sans Paroles Henrique OSWALD (1852-1931) Berceuse Ségio de VASCONCELLOS-CORRÊA (b.1934) Seresta Tânia Lisboa (cello); Cristina Capparelli (piano) MERIDIAN RECORDS CDE84572 [78:30] [NB]

A disc full of music that at its best is very fine indeed and richly deserving to be more widely known.

Live in Buenos Aires Johann Sebastian BACH (1685-1750) Keyboard concerto Igor STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Concerto John DOWLAND (1563-1626) Forlorn Hope Fancy; Mr Dowland’s Midnight; Can She Excuse Egberto GISMONTI (b.1947) Forrobodó; Frevo Osvaldo GOLIJOV (b.1960) Last Round Astor PIAZZOLLA (1921-1992) Milonga del ángel; Libertango Joanna MacGregor (piano), Jacqueline Shave (violin), Markus Van Horn and Roger Linley (bass duo), Britten Sinfonia/Jacqueline Shave rec. 2007 WARNER CLASSICS 2564 68475-9 [67:57] [JW]

Enjoyable and sassy.

Bezaly and Brautigam: Masterworks for flute and piano II by Poulenc, Martin, Reinecke, Martinu & Messiaen Sharon Bezaly (flute) Ronald Brautigam (piano) rec.2008 BIS-SACD-1729 [59:23] [DM]

Another imaginative, well-executed offering from BIS.

Contemporary British Organ Music - Volume 1 Music by Gabriel Jackson & Laurence Crane Mark O’Keefe (trumpet), Michael Bonaventure (organ) rec. 2010 SFZ MUSIC SFZM0410 [72:51] [BBr]

Two very exciting British composers who have made their mark on the UK’s music in very different ways.

Bound For Glory - Songs and Piano Music on a Railway Theme Gordon Pullin (tenor) John Gough (piano) STEWART ORR SOUND SERVICES SOSSCD369 [70:14] [JF]

A great CD introducing a wide variety of British song … unusual and challenging.

Convergence Music for Piano and Percussion Strike rec. 2009 LUMINESCENCE RECORDS LUM002 [65:49] [NB]

Not the comfy-chair school of mogadon-music but serious and significant music all composed and performed with exceptional skill and musicality and no little wit.

Diva Danielle de Niese (soprano) O Age of Enlightenment/Sir Charles Mackerras rec. 2007-10 DECCA 478 2417 DH [56.06] [RF]

This poor value disc is a marketing ploy that tells us nothing of Miss de Niese’s development

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH English Lute Songs Robin Blaze (counter-tenor); Elizabeth Kenny (lute) rec. 1999 HYPERION HELIOS CDH55249 [70:34] [EM]

A superb disc of excellent programme and performance.

English Recorder Music Works by Lane, Arnold, Pitfield, Gregson, Lyon, Parrott & Bullard John Turner, Royal Ballet Sinf/Gavin Sutherland, Edward Gregson rec. 1999 NAXOS 8.572503 [73:37] [NB]

A very warm welcome back to this disc – a gently life-enhancing potter through less demanding pathways.

Firebirds of Paris rec. 1927-1949 MARSTON 510082 [79:18] [JW]

This important cultural phenomenon has been nicely compiled and collated, and beautifully presented.

French Sacred Music for Choir and Organ David Goode (organ) Eton College Chapel Choir/Ralph Allwood rec. 2009 SIGNUM CLASSICS SIGCD206 [69:04] [RH]

Well worth investigating.

Art of Ivry Gitlis Violin Concertos Ivry Gitlis (violin) Vienna SO/Jascha Horenstein, Hans Swarowsky rec. 1953-62 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 9145 [3 CDs: 79:42 + 79:27 + 70:12] [JW]

Fascinating, provoking and often brilliant.

The Golden Age of Light Music - Strings in Rhythm rec. 1953-59 GUILD GLCD 5167 [77:59] [BBr]

A lack of direction and purpose in this issue.

Gregorian and Ambrosian Chant Schola Cantorum Coloniensis/Gabriel Maria Steinschulte rec. live 1983/94 VIRGIN CLASSICS 6285142 [74:50 + 73:06] [BW]

A welcome and inexpensive means of escape to a more spiritual world.

Bernard Hermann A Concert of English Music George Frederick HANDEL Water Music Suite (arr. Harty) Ralph VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Oboe Concerto Edward ELGAR Falstaff Mitchell "Mitch" Miller (oboe) Columbia Broadcasting SO/Bernard Herrmann rec. 1945 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC202 [75:50]
A Concert of American Music
Charles IVES Symphony 2 Robert RUSSELL BENNETT Violin Concerto Bernard HERRMANN Welles Raises Kane Louis Kaufman (violin) London SO, Columbia Broadcasting SO/Bernard Herrmann rec. 1949/56 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC232 [76:44] [RB]

Mono Herrmann recordings open up a lost world. The English collection is to be preferred. The sound of the American one can be testing though the Bennett concerto will have you forgiving everything else.

Hommage à Chopin Jonathan Plowright (piano) rec. 2009 HYPERION CDA67803 [79:40] [CC]

The combination of top-flight artist, superb recording quality and truly imaginative, attractive programming seems quintessentially Hyperion. Yet another winner.

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH Byron Janis Edition - The Legendary Concerto Recordings Moscow PO/Kirill Kondrashin, Moscow Radio SO/Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Minneapolis SO/Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, London SO/Herbert Menges, Antal Dorati, rec. 1960-63 BRILLIANT CLASSICS 9182 [4 CDs: 261:56] [RB]

Classic readings without a hint of autopilot. Demands your attention and will reward it with generosity.

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Jonas Kaufmann – Verismo Arias Jonas Kaufmann (tenor) Eva-Maria Westbroek (sop) Rosa Feola (soprano) Cristina Reale (mezzo) O dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia Roma/Antonio Pappano DECCA 478 2258 [61 :52] [RMo]

Kaufmann just gets better and better.

Légende Works for saxophone & orchestra by Debussy, Schmitt, Tomasi, D'Indy & Maurice Theodore Kerkezos (saxophone) London SO/Yuri Simonov rec. 2010 ONYX 4065 [66.56] [RB]

A lovely disc, well documented and crying out with discoveries.

Love Songs by Heise, Weyse & Lange-Müller Mathias Hedegaard (tenor) Tove Lønskov (piano) rec. 2009 DACAPO 8.226141 [68:47] [GF]

A fair picture of the best of Danish song writing from the period before Nielsen
