Johann
Strauss II (the Younger) composed his operetta Eine Nacht
in Venedig in 1883. The story was based on the French novel Chateau
Trompette (by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré), and the text
was provided by F Zell and Richard Genée, the latter having
collaborated with Strauss to great success on a number of occasions.
It sports a typically convoluted plot involving cooks, barbers,
lady’s maids, fisher-girls, Senators, and a masked ball hosted
by an amorous Duke, at which all the women disguise themselves
as each other. But the various impending disasters are averted
and all live happily ever after.
It
was premiered in Berlin where both text and music were heavily
criticised. Strauss and his librettists were forced to revise
it – the ensuing Austrian production enjoying 44 performances.
The composer Erich Korngold then revised it further, for another
Berlin performance in 1923, and it underwent significant cuts,
additions, re-orderings and re-working of material.
This
Naxos Historical re-issue features a recording made in the Kingsway
Hall in 1954, and the sound is reasonably good. The cast are,
as one might expect, all of top quality, and there is some stunning
singing in particular from Nicolai Gedda as the Duke - listen
to the start of track 17, for example.
I
do find it a shame, however, that the dialogue has been included,
despite the fact that some highly rated actors take some of
the speaking parts - including Karel Stepanek (from Sink
the Bismarck, amongst many other films. There is a fair
amount of this, and it does not come across particularly well.
It sounds rather awkward in fact and can become rather tedious
for non-German speakers.
On
the whole, the music is pleasant and ebullient. It could be
called generally unremarkable, but, in its favour, there are
some meltingly tender and beautiful moments. A charming operetta,
and excellent cast. Worth a listen.
