MUSIC COMPETITIONS
I would like to draw your attention to our recent report of the Rhodes International Choirs Competition, one of an series of examinations of very different international music performance and composing competitions. The link to our most recent one at Rotterdam will lead you on to five others, each unique. Your memories and comments about your own experiences of competitions (recent or distant) and your responses to our opinions and suggestions, would be greatly welcomed and appreciated.

BOOK REVIEW

RUSSELL MARTIN Beethoven's Hair Bloomsbury £14.99 ISBN 0-7679-0350-1 [CF]

Hopefully this book will not spawn any others - the prospect of 'Mozart's teeth' or 'Bach's feet' is too ghastly and gruesome to contemplate.

RANDALL THOMPSON: A Bio-Bibliography  By Caroline Cepin Benser and David Francis Urrows   No. 38 (ISSN: 0742-6968)  Greenwood Press. Westport, Conn. 1991. 248 pages  LC 90-29279. ISBN 0-313-25521-0. BRO/ $55.00 [RB]

Much more than a book of lists. Make it your companion to an exploration of the music of Randall Thompson

SCORE REVIEWS

Malcolm Arnold - A Flourish for Orchestra op. 112. Faber Music 20 pages ISBN: 0-571-52018-9 [AP]

Frank BRIDGE (1879-1941) Three Orchestral Full Scores from Faber Music Enter Spring (1927)
057150518X £14.95 70 pages; Oration - Concerto Elegiaco (1930)  0571505589 £14.95 70 pages; Mid of the Night (1903) 0571520200 £24.95 104 pages Faber Music

Three fine scores extremely well presented and from distinct stages in Bridge's development. The Symphonic Poem will be of great interest. The other two scores are Twentieth Century Classics.

Gerald FINZI Three short elegies op.5 for mixed voices a cappella (words by William Drummond). London: Boosey & Hawkes, 1936 [1999 printing]. ISMN M-060-03044-4.

Gerald FINZI Songs to poems by Christina Rossetti op.1 for unison and two-part voices and piano. London: Boosey & Hawkes, 1999. ISMN M-060-11036-8

Drummond settings: Trouble in preparing these will be rewarded - well worth the effort.
Rossetti settings: Fun to read through, and good to see them back in print in this centenary year.

A paean for Peter Warlock - ten pieces for organ by Frank Bayford, Brian Collins, Timothy Craig Harrison, Trevor Hold, Anthony Ingle,. John Mitchell, Ian Parrott, Betty Roe, Keith Glennie Smith and Eric Wetherell. 51 pages
Thames Publishing, distributed by William Elkin Music Services, Station Road Industrial Estate, Salhouse, Norwich, Norfolk, NR13 6NS [AP]

All in all, a fine release of fairly well-known and loved pieces with, as a bonus, an unusual, though well worth having arrangement of Pictures.

THE POWER OF LOVE BRITISH OPERA ARIAS  Rare repertoire- see review for listing Deborah Riedel (soprano), Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra/Bonynge Rec. St Scholastica Chapel, Sidney in August 1999 MELBA 301082 [69.49]

BARGAIN OF THE MONTH

GREAT MOMENTS OF ELISABETH SCHWARZKOPF EMI CMS 5 67634 2 [2 CDs, 63' 50", 57' 38"] [CH]

An essential purchase for all those who care about singing in the last 50 years or so.

HEIFETZ CENTENARY MEMORIAL EDITION Naxos 8.107001 - Set of 7 individual CDs in a cardboard presentation case [PSe]

Sounding, as you have every right to expect, exactly like much-loved, very well cared for, and rarely played 78s, this set is a treasure-house for both serious students of the art of violin-playing and those simply seeking something to rekindle their sense of wonder.

WALTON: Façade (the complete extant numbers).  CONSTANT LAMBERT:  Suite from the incidental music to Salome.   Eleanor Bron, Richard Stilgoe, The Nash Ensemble, David Lloyd-Jones.   Hyperion CDA67239. [SL]

Under the able direction of David Lloyd-Jones, is well worth considering. It comes in a handsome casing, with John Piper's 1942 curtain design on the cover. One should not, however, overlook Pamela Hunter's 'complete version' (Discover DICD 920125). Available in some places at super-budget price ($6)
