ALPHABETICAL LISTING

Carlos SEIXAS (1704 - 1742) Harpsichord Concerto in A Major [8.06] Symphony in B flat Major [8.08] Overture in D Major [7.54] Harpsichord Concerto in G Minor (anonymous) [16.42] Ferenc Liszt Chamber Orchestra/Janos Rolla Janos Sebestyen/harpsichord rec: 1982 (symphony/overture), 1984 (concertos). STRAUS SP 4154 [41.45] [KM]

A disappointing disc containing unremarkable orchestral music from the pre-classical period.

Carlos SEIXAS (1704-1742) Harpsichord Sonatas José Luis Uriol/harpsichord rec: November 1981. PORTUGALSOM CD 870014/PS [51.40] [KM]

A very attractive disc of short harpsichord works by a little-known 18th century Portuguese composer.

Johann STRAUSS (1825-1899) Die Fledermaus Operetta in Three Acts sung in English. Recorded at The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, New Year's Eve 1990 on the occasion of Joan Sutherland's farewell performance.   Conducted by Richard Bonynge ARTHAUS DVD 100 134 2 DVDs [197 mins]  [IL]

A magical souvenir of a sparkling evening. A splendid, sumptuous performance of Johann Strauss's evergreen operetta, with so many memorable, extra treats. Don't miss this one!

STRAVINSKY (1882-1971) Firebird Suite, The Rite of Spring, Symphony of Psalms, Pulcinella Suite, Concerto in E flat: Dumbarton Oaks, Petrushka (1911 version), Circus Polka DEUTSCHE GRAMMOPHON Panorama 469 205 2 [2 discs; 74.54 & 77.39][TB]

These CDs contains a wealth of top quality material from DG's back catalogue, with sound that has emerged from its latest remastering very satisfactorily.

Eino TAMBERG (b.1930) Symphony No. 1 (1972) * [17.15] Symphony No. 2 (1979) ** [17.22] Violin Concerto (1981) *** [24.08] *** Irina Botschkowa (violin)/Estonian State SO/Peeter Lilje ** Estonian State SO/Peeter Lilje * Estonian Radio SO/Neeme Järvi rec Estonian Radio: July 1986 (sym 2); July 1985 (concerto); June 1978 (sym 1). ANTES EDITION BM-CD 31.9075 [58.45] [RB]

Mildly modernistic music with roots in the later Shostakovich.

TAVENER Total Eclipse Agraphon John Harle (saxophone) Patricia Rozario (soprano) Academy of Ancient Music/Paul Goodwin HARMONIA MUNDI HMU907271 [PS]

Tavener addicts will need no urging to invest in this disc; others are urged to give it a trial.

Tommaso TRAETTA  Antigona Bayo/Allemano/Panzarella/Polverelli/Ragon, Accentus/Les Talens Lyriques cond. Christophe Rousset, DECCA L'Oiseau-Lyre 460 204-2 [160 mins] [PGW]

This release will not disappoint collectors of rare baroque opera. To sample Antigona at its best, try the first scene of Act 2, in which the grieving Antigone conducts a forbidden funeral ceremony for her brother, supported by a chorus of her loyal serving maids.

Christopher TYE (c.1505-1573) Cathedral Music:-  Kyrie 'Orbis Factor'; Mass 'Euge Bone'; Motets; Quaesumus omnipotens Deus; Misere mei, Deus; Omnes gentes, plaudite manibus; Peccavimus cum patribus nostris The Choir of Winchester Cathedral/David Hill Rec Winchester Cathedral March 1990 HYPERION CDH55079 [64.38] [GH]

A fine and attractively priced disc, the music is attractive, the singing first class, and the polyphony never too impenetrable or over long.

A LONDON SYMPHONY: revelation & a new understanding
Vaughan Williams
A London Symphony (original 1913 version), world premiere recording
Butterworth
:  Banks of Green Willow   London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Richard Hickox Chandos CHAN 9902 67:42 [LF]

A wonderful surprise from Chandos - one of those unexpected artistic coups which from time to time makes record collecting such an adventure and a joy.

VERDI  La Traviata   Angela Gheorghiu, Frank Lopardo, Leo Nucci; Royal Opera House Orchestra & Chorus/Sir Georg Solti DECCA DVD 071 431-9 [135 min] (All Regions NTSC disc) [PGW]

Gheorghiu relaxed in her singing and her characterisation was subtle and detailed throughout, under Richard Eyre's traditional, but carefully observed, own operatic debut.

VERDI Requiem  (Live recording from Edinburgh Festival, 1982)   Margaret Price (soprano); Jessye Norman (mezzo-soprano); Jose Carreras (tenor); Ruggero Raimondi (bass); Edinburgh Festival Chorus, London Symphony Orchestra/Claudio Abbado Arthaus DVD 100  [146 87 mins] [MB]

A DVD that listeners will return to again and again for a performance that ranks amongst the very greatest ever committed to disc. It cannot fail to give pleasure.

VOORMOLEN (1895 - 1980) Baron Hop Suite No. 1 (1924) [16.23] Concerto for two Oboes & Orchestra * (1933) [21.43] Eline, Nocturne for Orchestra (1951) [11.19] Baron Hop Suite no. 2 (1931) [21.47] Residentie Orchestra, The Hague conducted by Matthias Bamert * with Pauline Oostenrijk & Hans Roerade (oboe) Recorded May, 1999 Chandos CHAN 9815 [71.44] [JQ]

A most interesting disc of unfamiliar repertory which is well worth exploring

WALTON: Façade (the complete extant numbers).  CONSTANT LAMBERT:  Suite from the incidental music to Salome.   Eleanor Bron, Richard Stilgoe, The Nash Ensemble, David Lloyd-Jones.   Hyperion CDA67239. [SL]

Under the able direction of David Lloyd-Jones, is well worth considering. It comes in a handsome casing, with John Piper's 1942 curtain design on the cover. One should not, however, overlook Pamela Hunter's 'complete version' (Discover DICD 920125). Available in some places at super-budget price ($6)

WOLF Mörike Lieder; Goethe Lieder Barbara Hendricks (soprano) Roland Pontinen (piano). EMI Classics CDC5 56988 2 7 (DDD) [72.13]   [DW]

A super disc with some very lovely performances that I will treasure.

WOLF-FERRARI (1876-1948) Sly   José Carreras (ten), Isabelle Kabatu (sop) & Sherrill Milnes (bar)/Barcelona Liceu Choir & Orchestra/David Giménez.KOCH-SCHWANN 364492 [114 mins] [PGW]

A gutsy, live recording of an old-fashioned but durable tragic opera, which balances to perfection story and music. José Carreras's last act monologue is a tour de force amongst self revelatory solo scenes in opera.

Bill WORLAND  Orchestral Works RTE Concert Orchestra/Gavin Sutherland MARCO POLO British Light Music 8.225161 [PS]

Bill Worland will be a new experience for many of you, but hopefully an enjoyable one.
