Salvatore Accardo: Masterclass in Cremona - Volume 1 With Lucia Luque and Laura Marzadori (violins) DYNAMIC 33693 [72:00] [JW]

Functional watching with nothing fancy to detain one from the music-making itself.

Gary Bertini Works by Berlioz, Mahler, Ravel & Strauss Martha Argerich, Elisabeth Leonskaja (piano) Thomas Quasthoff (bass-baritone) Håkan Hagegård (baritone) Kölner RSO rec. 1985-94 CAPRICCIO 7136 [5 CDs: 300:10] [NB]

My admiration for Bertini is undimmed but this is something of a mixed bag.

Leo Blech Overtures and Dances London SO/Leo Blech rec. 1931 PRISTINE AUDIO PASC 354 [77:48] [JW]

Blech as conductor unshackled from the confining best accompanist role.

Le Boeuf sur le toit - Swinging Paris Alexandre Tharaud, Frank Braley (piano) Madeleine Peyroux, Natalie Dessay, Guillaume Gallienne (vocals) The Virgin Voices rec. 2012 VIRGIN CLASSICS 4407372 [67:25] [JW]

A front row seat at a Parisian cabaret where Alexandre Tharaud, assisted by his confrères, celebrates the music of the 1920s.

British Opera Overtures Works by Benedict, Barnett, Balfe, Loder, Wallace, MacFarren & Thomas Victorian Opera O/Richard Bonynge rec. 2011 SOMM RECORDINGS SOMM0123 [74.36] [JF]

Interest, character and downright tunefulness.

Chicago Moves Gaudete Brass rec. 2012 CEDILLE RECORDS CDR 90000 136 [63:00] [BR]

An excellent introduction to the latest in brass quintet music. I hope there is more to come from these composers and performers.

Coloratura Works by Sibelius, Gliere & Zorn Anu Komsi (soprano) Lahti SO/Sakari Oramo rec. 2011 BIS BIS-SACD-1962 [66:27] [GF]

There is a lot to admire on this disc.

Demilitarised Zones - Marches by Prokofiev, Weill, Chabrier, Beethoven, Wagner and others HR brass/Lutz Köhler rec. 1993 CAPRICCIO C5121 [68:00] [RB]

If the blend appeals then this should set your feet tapping and your mind racing.

Deutsche Oper Berlin: 1961-1967 Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Fidelio Giuseppe VERDI (1813-1901) Don Carlos, Otello Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Don Giovanni Domenico CIMAROSA (1749-1801) Il matrimonio segreto ARTHAUS MUSIK 107522 [6 DVD] [PCG]

One can only commend the German television companies for making the recordings we have here.

Early One Morning Part songs and folk songs by Parry, Stanford, Delius & Elgar The Louis Halsey Singers, Elizabethan Singers/Louis Halsey rec. 1965-77 DECCA ELOQUENCE 480 2077 [78:41 + 61:22] [IL]

Technically very competent and beautifully expressive.

Energico Works by Paganini, Takemitsu, Llobet & Boyle Marco Ramelli (guitar) rec. 2012 NIMBUS ALLIANCE NI6218 [58:48] [SA]

A young guitarist about whom I’m sure we’ll hear a great deal more.

English Fancy - music by Baltzar, Byrd, Hume, Jenkins, Lawes, Locker and Purcell Trio Settecento rec. 2011 CEDILLE CDR 90000 135 [79.47] [GH]

A fascinating and worthwhile collection excellently documented.

A European Odyssey London Schubert Players and friends rec. 2010-11 various locations NIMBUS NI6195 [3 CDs: 226:56] [JW]

Despite the odd looking package I’m glad I listened.

Anatole Fistoulari Russian Concert Favourites Royal PO, Philharmonia O rec. 1956-58 GUILD GHCD2391 [68:45] [JW]

A terrific disc fully reflecting Fistoulari’s energy, creativity and stirring musicianship.

A Tribute to Frederick the Great Flute Concertos at Sanssouci Works by Frederick II of Prussia, Benda & Quantz Emmanuel Pahud (flute) Kammerakademie Potsdam/Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord) rec. 2011 C MAJOR 711308 [78:00] [JW]

Enjoyable but rather more of a once-only experience.

The French Album - Mélodies Françaises Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (baritone) Wolfgang Sawallisch (piano) Soloists of the BPO rec. 1975 ACANTA RECORDS 233651 [53:08] [MC]

This disc of French songs will appeal mainly to Fischer-Dieskau devotees.

The Organ of Guildford Cathedral Katherine Dienes-Williams, David Davies (organ) rec. 2009 HERALD HAVPCD 371 [77:16] [HP-R]

This is a liberal mixture of the familiar and the new – with an incredibly high performance standard.

Irvin_Epoque Irvin Venyš (clarinet), Epoque Qt, David Pavelka (bass) rec. 2011 ARCO DIVA UP 0147-2 131 [56:25] [JW]

A handful of works by Czech and Slovak composers across two generations with three works from the Americas.

Israel Philharmonic 75th Anniversary Concert Camille SAINT-SAËNS (1835-1921) Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Piano Concerto 1, Scherzo 2 Ernest CHAUSSON (1855-1899) Poème Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770-1827) Symphony 8 Julian Rachlin, Vadim Repin (violin) Evgeny Kissin (piano) Israel PO/Zubin Mehta rec. 2011 EUROARTS 2059098 [concert: 95:00; documentary: 52:00] [DC]

A celebration and a warm invitation.

The Leiden Choirbooks Volumes I-III Egidius Kwartet and College/Peter de Groot rec. 2010-12 ET'CETERA KTC 1410-12 [6 CDs: 420:36] [JV]

A most ambitious, impressive and historically important project.

Lieder zur Weihnacht in der Dresdner Frauenkirche Peter Schreier (tenor), Hansjorg Albrecht (piano, organ) rec. 2000 BERLIN CLASSICS 0300428BC [61:64] [MC]

Schreier sounds fresh and spontaneous, demonstrating a fine feeling for the texts.

I Love Mozart and I Love Barbara Friedrich Gulda (piano) and Barbara Dannerlein (organ, synthesizer) rec. 1990 ARTHAUS MUSIK 101 635 [94:00] [JW]

Is this an essential DVD? No. Can you live without it? Of course you can. Is it interesting? Yes.
