Another release of live performances that show us what an exceptional talent was Guido Cantelli.

Fryderyk CHOPIN (1810-1849) Nocturnes, Etudes, Scherzos, Fantaisie, Mazurkas, Polonaises Marcin Koziak (piano) rec. 2010 FRYDERYK CHOPIN INSTITUTE NIFCCD616 [79:39] [BR]

Technically very good and emotionally feels correct but not inspired.

Claude DEBUSSY (1862-1918) Children’s Corner, Suite bergamasque, Arabesques Angela Hewitt (piano) rec. 2011 HYPERION CDA67898 [79:36] [WH]

The incandescent artistry of Guido Cantelli is communicated vividly through these three magnificent performances.

Frederick DELIUS (1862-1934) Cello sonata see British Works for Cello and Piano

A decent Duruflé Requiem with an enterprising coupling.

Maurice DURUFLÉ (1902-1986) Requiem, Quatre motets, Complete works for organ Randi Stene (soprano) Bo Skovhus (baritone) Henrik Brendstrup (cello) Kristian Krogsøe (organ) Aarhus Cathedral Ch, Vocal Group Concert Clemens/Carsten Seyer-Hansen rec. 2012 DANACORD DACOCD726 [62:17 + 58:21] [WH]

A highly satisfying collection of Duruflé’s masterly organ music, coupled with some very fine choral singing from Aarhus.

Antonín DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) String Quartet 13, Cypresses, Waltzes Cecilia Qt rec. 2011 ANALEKTA AN29892  [57:58] [BR]

Brings to mind the worst excesses of Phase Four.

Antonín DVOŘÁK (1841-1904) Piano Quintet 2 see SCHUMANN

Edward ELGAR (1857-1934) The Starlight Express Elin Manahan Thomas (soprano), Roderick Kennedy (baritone), Simon Callow (narrator) Scottish CO/Sir Andrew Davis rec. 2012 CHANDOS CHSA 5111(2) [58.03 + 80.05] [PCG]

An exceptionally fine Fauré Requiem though other aspects of this programme may be more controversial.

Johann Jacob FROBERGER (1616 - 1667) Suites and Toccatas Alina Rotaru (harpsichord) rec. 2011 CARPE DIEM CD-16290 [63:54] [FD]

Hyperion: a most welcome return from Ex Cathedra in this colourful repertoire; Passacaille: an excellent next step for those who already know some of Gabrieli’s music.

Complete String Trios Hans GÁL (1890-1987) Serenade, String Trio Hans KRÁSA (1899-1944) Tanec, Passacaglia and Fuga Ensemble Epomeo rec. 2011. DDD AVIE AV2259 [67:08][Byz]

Ensemble Epomeo are as much at home with Gál’s elegant, romantic classicism as with the more semantically ambiguous Krása.

Alberto GINASTERA (1916-1983) Impresiones de la Puna see Pipe Dreams - Sharon Bezaly

Christoph Willibald GLUCK (1714 - 1787) Iphigénie en Tauride Juliette Galstian, Rodney Gilfry, Deon van der Walt, Zurich Opera/William Christie rec. 2001 ARTHAUS 100 377 [108:00] [GF]

A great introduction to Griffes’ exotic impressionism, one of the greatest of American sound-worlds. The Taylor is non-essential but fun.

Natalie Dessay brings real star quality to the part of Cleopatra.

Paul HINDEMITH (1895-1963) String Quartets 5-7 Amar Qt rec. 2009/10 NAXOS 8.572164 [71:13]  [Byz]

Memorable readings, urbane and high-fidelity, cordial and eloquent.

Paul HINDEMITH (1895-1963) Ludus Tonalis, Suite 1922 John McCabe (piano) rec. 1995 HYPERION HELIOS CDH 55413 [69:13] [Byz]

A substantial bargain for all collectors of the key piano works of the 20th century.
