PERFORMANCE:
On 24th April Ashley Wass
will perform both the Twelve
Preludes and Fantasy Waltzes
at Nichol Hill Methodist Church,
Louth starting at 7.30pm.
On 3rd May as part of the
Brighton Fringe Festival the
pianist Terence Albright will
give a performance of the
Sonata alla Toccata as part
of his recital at the Friends'
Meeting House, Ship Street,
Brighton starting at 5.15pm.
On 15th May Ashley Wass will
perform the Fantasy Waltzes
as part of his concert at
the Spring Orpheus & Bacchus
Festival which will take place
at Le Faure, Gensac, South
West France.
On 25th May as part of The
English Music Festival the
Bridge Quartet will perform
the Three Winter Poems for
String Quartet at Radley College
Chapel, Oxfordshire beginning
at 11am.
On 27th May also as part of
The English Music Festival
the Sonatina for violin and
piano will be given by Philippe
Graffin (violin) and Marisa
Gupta (piano) at Radley College
Silk Hall, Oxfordshire starting
at 2.30pm.
On 12th July as part of the
Buxton Festival Naiades (Flute&Harp)
and Crepuscule (solo Harp)
will be performed by Siobhan
Grealy (flute) and Lucy Wakeford
(harp) at King Sterndale Church,
Buxton starting at 2pm.
On 27th July also as part
of the Buxton Festival Autumn
Legend for Cor Anglais and
String Orchestra will be performed
by Marios Argiros (cor anglais)
with the Northern Chamber
Orchestra conducted by Nicholas
Ward at the Palace Hotel,
Buxton starting at 2.45pm.
On 5th September as part of
the West Norfolk Music Festival,
the Tippett Quartet will perform
the String Quartet No.2 (Spring
Waters) as part of their concert
at All Saints Church, Stoke
Ferry, Norfolk starting at
7.30pm.
PUBLICATIONS:

on 18th September is the first
full length biography of William
Alwyn written by Adrian Wright.
The book is entitled 'The
Innumerable Dance - The Life
and Work of William Alwyn.'
The book will be published
in hardback format only at

RECORDINGS:
The
SOMM label, in their Beecham
Collection series, have issued
for the first time the World
Premier Performance of Alwyn's
3rd Symphony which took place
at the Royal Festival Hall
on 10th October 1956 with
the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Also included on the disc
are Mozart's Symphony No.29
in A K201 recorded at the
same concert and Grieg's Symphonic
Dances Op.64. The latter is
a studio broadcast from Maida
Vale recorded in 1955. The
catalogue number is SOMM-BEECHAM

In January the Lyrita label
released it's final Alwyn
recordings - the song cycle
'Mirages,' Divertimento' for
solo flute, 'Naiades' for
flute and harp and the Sonata
alla Toccata and Fantasy Waltzes
for piano solo. The artists
are Benjamin Luxon (baritone),
David Willison (piano), Christopher
Hyde-Smith (flute), Marisa
Robles (harp) and Sheila Randell
(piano in the two solo piano
works). this is a 2-CD set
with the catalogue number

Recently released by Albany
Records in the U.S.A. is a
CD that contains two Alwyn
works - Fanfare for a Joyful
Occasion and the Concerto
for Flute and Eight Wind Instruments.
The soloist in the Concerto
is Mary Stolper with the DePaul
University Wind Ensemble under
the direction of Donald DeRoche.
The disc has the overall title
of "Music for Joyful
Occasions" and bears
the catalogue number TROY
1006.
Naxos:
1. Due in July is an orchestral
disc containing the following
works: Overture to a Masque,
Concerto Grosso No.1, Pastoral
Fantasia, Five Preludes (World
Premiere Recording), Tragic
Interlude, Autumn Legend and
Suite of Scottish Dances.
The artists are Philip Dukes
(viola), RLPO conducted by
David Lloyd Jones. The disc
has the catalogue number 8.570704.
2. Due in September is a second
volume of piano music from
Ashley Wass containing the
following works: Twelve Preludes,
Movements, Night Thoughts,
Contes Barbares-Homage to
Paul Gauguin, Two Irish Pieces,
Water Lilies, Cinderella and
Hunter's Moon. The last five
titles are all World Premiere
Recordings. The catalogue
number is 8.570464.
3. Due in October are the
String Quartets 1-3 plus the
World Premier Recording of
Novelette as performed by
the Maggini Quartet. The catalogue
