NEWS

Performance

On the 14th November 2009 the Bushey Symphony Orchestra under the direction of George Vass will give a performance of the Elizabethan Dances as part of their concert at Bushey Hall School, Bushey, Herts commencing at 7.30pm.

Also, during November, William Alwyn will be the featured composer at the St Petersburg English Music Festival, in which five works will be performed along with a symposium about the composer. This will be the first time that any of Alwyn’s music has been performed in Russia. The concerts are as follows:

18th November: Concerto Grosso No. 2 in G major for String Orchestra – St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra/Rudi Eastwood – Glinka Chamber Philharmonic Hall, St Petersburg
19th November: String Quartet No. 2 (Spring Waters) – Nevsky String Quartet – Sheremetev Palace, St Petersburg
20th November: Sonatina for Violin and Piano – Madeleine Mitchell (Violin), Rudi Eastwood (Piano) – Rimsky-Korsakov Memorial Museum, St Petersburg
25th November: Mirages - Song Cycle for Baritone and Piano – Mikhail Lukonin (Baritone), Yuri Serov (Piano) – Sheremetev Palace, St Petersburg
25th November: Concerto for Flute and Eight Wind Instruments (artists still to be confirmed) – Sheremetev Palace, St Petersburg
The symposium/seminar will take place on 22nd November at the Composers’ Union Hall, St Petersburg commencing at 12 noon

On 5th December there will be a performance of the Symphony No. 4 by the Bloomsbury Symphony Orchestra conducted by Michael Turner at St. Giles, Cripplegate, London commencing at 7.30pm

Recordings

Late October will see a new disc from Dutton/Epoch that will include 5 orchestral works hitherto unrecorded. These are as follows: Overture in the Form of Serenade, Prelude, Peter Pan Suite, Blackdown – a tone poem from the Surry Hills, and Ad Infinitum – a Satire for Orchestra. The disc will also include premieres of works by Vaughan Williams, York Bowen, and Hubert Parry. The performers are the BBC Concert Orchestra under the direction of John Wilson. The catalogue number is CDLX 7237.

Publishing

Due from Toccata Press in late October/early November is a collection of Alwyn writings and essays under the general title of Composing in Words – William Alwyn on his Art compiled and edited by Andrew Palmer. The book will include extended versions of Ariel to Miranda and Winged Chariot along with essays on Bax, Puccini, Elgar, film music, and Czech Music. The Foundation has just launched into self-publishing, and the first title will be available in the next few weeks. This will be the hitherto unpublished piano piece Cricketty Mill which was recorded by Ashley Wass on the first volume of Alwyn Piano Music (Naxos – 8.570359). Further details will follow in due course.
