Percy GRAINGER (1882–1961)
The Grainger Edition - Sixty Years: 1961-2021
rec. 1992-2015
CHANDOS CHAN20196(21) [21 CDs: c. 25 hrs]

Chandos keep faith with the music of Percy Grainger and do it in generous measure; generous in quantity; generous in nobility.

This is not the first time they have issued a Grainger box. A first version of this one appeared boxed but in different livery in 2011 (review). The present set marks sixty years since Grainger’s death and no other encompasses as much or does so as handsomely.

Differences from the 2011 set? The visual design differs. Also, this new box is a swing-top cap box while the earlier one is a wallet container. The new one feels more rugged than the “Brilliant-style” original. Its praiseworthy that the two boxes accommodate the number of CDs and booklet snuggly rather than needing the sort of polystyrene fillers that mark out quite a few issues from Universal and Warner. These also imply that there are more discs inside than are actually on offer and clutters shelf space; a small debit. The new box - about two jewel cases thicker than the 2011 box - encases a bumper booklet and 21 dapper card sleeves.

A substantive advantage, and one that most importantly marks out this set, is that it adds two Grainger CDs (20 and 21) that have been issued since the 2011 edition came out.

One wonders how various ebay and Amazon vendors will handle the two sets: this one and its 2011 predecessor. There is already some scope for tripping up between two Monteux boxes issued by Decca, one of which is his complete Decca output and the other, which is handsomely done, lays no claim to completeness and offers nothing approaching a complete survey. The other notable example of ‘fog’ is the Universal DG set called ‘The New Stravinsky Complete Edition’ which is said to be “the most complete survey of the composer’s works and marks the 50th anniversary of his death.” It can be distinguished - although box design is similar - from DG’s “The Stravinsky Complete Edition” issued in 2015. They’re both 30 CD boxes and the boxes look very similar. The new one bears the words “The New” on the front of the box. Strangely the New Edition is, for now, cheaper on Amazon than the old - about £9 less expensive.

Back to Grainger: For Chandos’s latest Grainger Edition the new CD sleeves come in a standard dark-coloured design while the original varied the photograph for each musical genre. The new package scores in at least one respect because each card disc-sleeve had pretty comprehensive track details on the reverse. The 2011 original numbered each CD on the sleeve but there were no track details on the sleeves. The new one is much more user-friendly in finding your way about the set. The 2011 original was also issued on a USB memory stick as Chandos CHUSB 0017; an option that, as far as I know, is not offered for the new 21-disc set.

Documentation is very good indeed. Barry Peter Ould of the Grainger Society has again provided the plentiful background notes. Full tracklists and all sung words are included in the booklet which runs to 208 pp as against the 2011 one at 179 pp. If you have the 2011 box then you could keep it and buy the two additional CDs individually: CHSA5121 Works for Large Chorus and Orchestra and CHAN10455 Transcriptions for Wind Orchestra.

There’s far too much here to address the music which, if played all the way through, would entail more than a full day and night’s listening. Its excellence and ground-breaking status is signalled by its first disc rating a place in Chandos’s Thirty Years box.

For those wanting to delve into the music then, do trawl Ian Lace’s reviews of many of the individual discs on this site reviewed as they were issued as individual discs. There is also a review of the 2011 set which you can top up with perusal of the last two discs: CHSA5121 and CHAN10455. The only small thing to mention is that it might have been tidier if CD 21 had been renumbered and placed after CD10 and if CD20 had been placed as CD 8 but this would have involved much finicky re-numbering of the other discs, sleeves and booklet.

If you need to explore further or differently then I would just mention the Naxos trio of wind band CDs his complete piano music on Nimbus (and earlier still, on Pearl) and Decca Eloquence’s 2 CD Salute to Percy Grainger. There are many other approaches as a search of this site will reveal. I also rather hope that one day the wide-ranging series of eight programmes on Grainger on Radio 3 (early 1970s) might be issued wholesale. I also still have the happiest memories of the wanton zest and almost anarchic delight engendered by Ashley Lawrence directing the augmented BBC Concert Orchestra in Grainger’s Strathspey and Reel; Britten (Decca) and Hickox (Chandos) notwithstanding.

As I said in the conclusion to the review of the first version of this set: “Grainger emerges as far more than pretty, cosy or genteel (Country Gardens); more a case of romantic, folksy, dangerous, exultant, tumultuous and, yes, sentimental. Glorious. A uniquely cornucopiac offering.” This still holds good.
