Mady Mesplé has in her time been the epitome of the Gallic
operette coloratura soprano. That’s certainly true but her range
was broader than that as this set demonstrates. Her recordings
for France’s EMI satellite (Pathé-Marconi) are well sampled
in earlier Mesplé anthologies, reviewed here by Göran
Forsling (
Opera
Arias and
Operetta
Airs). Her
Ganne,
Les
Saltimbanques and
Offenbach
Orfée
were each very well received here. The present collection reaches
further and with a much longer arm.
Born in 1931, she made her debut in 1956 after which she rose to fame
across Europe and beyond. In addition to what was regarded as her
alma mater in French musical theatre she encompassed contemporary
music, a selection of leading roles in German opera and French chanson.
In CD 1 her coloratura is applied to evident advantage in the flexible
tessitura required in Delibes. She does indeed stand and deliver in
the Lakmé
Air des clochettes. It’s an aria of
stratospheric purity as rendered here with just a tendency towards
metallic edginess. Still, it will appeal to canary-fanciers everywhere.
In
Tu m'as donnée one can hear where Herrmann mined
his fake opera aria for Kane. Similar strengths radiate from the extracts
from Massenet’s
Werther and Thomas’s
Mignon.
In Lalo’s
Roi d'Ys she can be heard in company with an
erotically-toned Nicolai Gedda. In the Offenbach
Les Contes de
Hoffmann her
Les oiseaux is heard with the most delightfully
dainty staccato singing. In the unusual
Lucia extract I was
struck by the extraordinary clarity of the sung words in the mad scene.
CD 2 shows that Mesplé still sounded great in 1980 and this
impression is driven home even more smoothly in the yearning
Le
jour sous le soleil. The words are pecked out with staccato accuracy
in
Petite dinde from
Véronique. Her tone is heartbreakingly
appealing in
C’est la première fois,
recorded
in 1968. Her role in Ganne’s
Les saltimbanques is similarly
lovely with something close to a Lehár ‘melt’.
By 1982 and her Hahn
Ciboulette her voice had taken on a darker
tinge. Her
Arpège by Fauré is both subtle and
clever.
On CD 3 we encounter Hahn’s
Chloris with its Purcellian
trills. The voice is darkened further in Hahn's
l’Heure exquise.
This can be compared again with the older Mesplé in the
Cinq
Mélodies. She became more generalised and unfocused in
her voice for
Tout gai, the final song of the
Mélodies
grecques. She recorded
mélodies (including Roussel)
in the studio during the 1980s with Gallois, Baldwin, Tacchino and
Ciccolini.
The final disc in the set is the most tangy and intriguing. Music
by Betsy Jolas involves a buzzing fragmentation of dissonance and
moaning - sheer Jane Manning territory. Charles Chaynes’
Four
Sappho Poems call on Mesplé to speak and whisper in sinister
endearment. It’s broken, spidery and operatically declamatory.
Chaynes puts her voice through its paces. We then progress to another
extreme with Vivaldi calling for - and getting - golden and glittering
singing in
Furore. The
Bachianas Brasileiras conducted
by Paul Capolongo seduces the mind. Poulenc’s
La dame de
Monte Carlo recorded in 1985 is deeply sentimental. Only in Rodrigo’s
song
De Los Alamos Vengo Madre do we experience a voice that
has become - at least on that day - squally and hard. Mesplé
adopts a lighter and deeply appealing tone, singing in your ear, in
Mouloudji's
Un jour, tu verras - in the sweetened tradition
of French chansons. We then hear her with Michel Legrand in a scatty
Schön Rosmarin.
These four discs are generously packed with three of them running
between 77 and 79 minutes.
The souvenir booklet is filled to the brim with no fewer than 37 photographs
of Mesplé. It will make some lament the passing of the large
format LP box but it’s pretty well done … as is its accompanying
booklet.
On the downside there are none of the sung words in the booklet; just
a decent scene-setter by Alain Duault.
Although first issued in 2011 this attractive specialist set is still
widely available.
