“I came to Robert, playing with a lot of tension and using too much effort. It was causing me many problems….Robert helped me find solutions for these kinds of problems. I will always be very thankful to Robert for the brilliant work he did with me.” Matyas Major (cellist)

“I can now play Bach suites in recital from memory, and really enjoy the freedom it brings. No inner voices telling me I’ll forget something, no stumbling along the way – just unrestricted and joyous music-making. Every time I play I think “Thank you Robert!” – he completely changed my playing.” Rachel Scott (cellist)

Take a professional violinist or cellist in an orchestra: imagine how traumatised they can be when a debilitating physical or psychological problem puts their vocation and livelihood in jeopardy, or even brings it to complete halt. How long will it last? Will they recover? Will they get a reputation for being unreliable and find it difficult to get work again? Their first step is usually to seek medical advice. But in many situations, only symptoms can be dealt with (a temporary patch). What should they do next?

Robert Cohen, one of the world’s leading cellists, has set up “Cello Clinic”, a unique and personal service giving musicians access to in-depth, specialist diagnosis of their physical and performing issues. With a distinguished international career as performer, teacher and communicator, Robert Cohen has for many years had a special interest and concern for musicians afflicted by severe pain or psychological problems.

From the increasing number of musicians that have sought his help after receiving medical attention, he became aware that to resolve their problems, they needed accurate diagnosis of the true, root causes of their playing and performing difficulties.

Although there are plenty of excellent books, articles, organisations and specialists dealing with generic problems, Robert knew that to resolve their specific issues, a personal, confidential and highly specialised bespoke service was essential.

Having spent 25 years researching and focusing on this very particular area, working with the principles that have been the backbone of his own methods for healthy, free and natural music-making, Robert decided it was time to formally open his door by creating his Cello Clinic.

Robert has helped hundreds of musicians with problems ranging from the pre-concert nerves of an aspiring artist to painful physical issues developed over time, afflicting established members of the profession. He has also helped non-musicians resolve their ‘stage fright’ when having to speak at public occasions.

To quote Robert:

“There is no substitute for extensive first-hand experience of the pressures that a soloist has to deal with. Through these experiences and working one-to-one with musicians all over the world, I have defined the detailed processes that musicians must go through to cope well with playing and performing. I have developed methods to quickly identify chronic or acute problems and accurately guide students and colleagues to good practices and positive physical and psychological techniques.”

Cello Clinic has links to leading therapists, consultants and practitioners in conventional and alternative medicine. Robert Cohen has established close relations with specialists in osteopathy, acupuncture, Chinese medicine, Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques and medical consultants in the areas of ears, shoulders, hands and wrists.
