It was nice to have a pleasant surprise in this job, groups that call themselves progressive, usually make strange noises which are hard to recognise as music, never mind jazz! Christian Escoude’s group is entirely the opposite, very musical and with a distinct and fresh sound, where the musicians are playing for the collective good of the group as opposed to a personal ego trip.

On track 4, someone plays tenor (Stephane?), there is some terrific accordion playing throughout and the leader’s guitar playing is sympathetic to each of the soloists, as well as being very creative in his own solo spots. The whole rhythm section plays together well and creates maximum swing without being over loud.

Most of the compositions are by the leader and each has a fine melodic content and makes an excellent vehicle for the group to improvise on. It says on the very brief sleeve note that Christian has not been in the recording studio for 6 years and on this showing, that is far to long! The group has a unique sound and is worthy of a wide and international audience.
