Jazz in Paris

A collection of 49 reissued recordings retraces the epic tale of the jazz musicians listened to, and cherished by the capital through the past seven decades.
Complete listing of titles at the bottom

I have had the pleasure of reviewing five of these records and it has been a pleasant and exhilarating experience. After the war, the intransigent attitude of the Musicians' Union in the UK and the American Federation of Musicians prevented American jazz musicians from working in the UK. The French did not have these problems and many of the greatest names in jazz spent several months, sometimes years in the French capital. By contrast the young, aspiring British jazz musicians, had to join "Geraldo's Navy", (A nickname given to the musicians who worked on the boats between London and New York), had to travel to the US to hear them. This gave French musicians a flying start into what at the time was largely a new genre in Europe.

Gitanes Jazz Productions deserve all our gratitude for releasing 50 albums at one time in this way; it is a very courageous move in a notoriously difficult market place. The packaging of the albums is superb; each cover has a feature of the city, a very informative sleeve note and excellent pictures of the featured artistes. They have also been digitally re-mastered and the sound quality is of the highest, the five I have heard have a fresh quality, even though in some cases the music is 40+ years old.

This CD features two bands, one led by pianist Bernard Peiffer and the other by Trombonist Bernard Zacharius. They were made in 1954, Francy Boland was the arranger for the Peiffer set and Buddy Banks had that role for Zacharius.

Bernard Peiffer
  1. I want to be happy

  2. Paris je t'aime…d'amour
  3. Pinocchio (When you wish upon a star)
  4. Who is me?
  5. Frozen Feet
  6. There's a small hotel
  7. Strip tease
  8. Don't touch the grisby
Bernard Zacharius
  1. Transcendentology

  2. The man I love.
  3. Somebody loves me
  4. Lady be good
  5. It ain't necessarily so
  6. Summertime
  7. My man's gone now
  8. I got plenty of nothing

Bernard Peiffer
Roger Guerin - Trumpet, Baritone Horn
Bobby Jasper, Bib Monville - Tenor Sax
Bernard Peiffer - Piano
Jean-Marie Ingrand - Bass
Jean-Baptiste Reilles - Drums

Jazz is an interesting music to work with because the results of any session are at times unpredictable, as I am familiar with the work of both Bobby Jasper and Roger Guerin, my expectations were that I would enjoy this part of the album the most. Add to what I have just stated, an arranger of the talent of Francy Boland and success seems assured. Whilst all of the soloists perform well, there is an unfortunate clash of styles and this prevents the music from ever really taking off despite some quite brilliant solo work. Francy Boland's arrangements are, as you would have expected, not without interest, but in this case he too is seemingly being pulled in different directions, to suit the musicians he is writing for.

Bernard Zacharius
Roger Guerin - Flugel
Bernard Zacharius - Trombone
Robert Casier - French Horn
Michel de Villiers - Bass Clarinet
Jean-Claude Forhenbatch - Tenor Sax
Guy Pedersen - Bass
Jaques David - Drums

Bernard Zacharius played Trombone with Claude Luter's Band at the" Vieux Colombier", Sidney Bechet who was living in France at the time also played in the same Band. Zacharius who is heavily featured, assembled a classic mainstream band and whilst it does not have a soloist of Bobby Jasper's class, it has a nice cohesive sound which equates with a pleasant listening experience. Buddy banks arrangements suit the band very well and the selection of tunes from Porgy and Bess are particularly enjoyable.

Chet Baker - Broken Wing

Gitanes - 013 043-2

  1. Broken wing

  2. Black eyes
  3. Oh you crazy moon
  4. How deep is the ocean
  5. Blue gilles
  6. Black eyes (Alternate take)
  7. How deep is the ocean (Alternate take)

Chet Baker - Trumpet
Phil Markowitz - Piano
Jean-Francois Jenny Clarke - Bass
Jeff Brillinger - Drums

This session was recorded in 1978 ten years before Chet's rather mysterious death in 1988. In many ways it was a miracle that he lasted so long, because for much of the latter part of his life his health was far from good. Like many of the famous names in jazz, he was badly affected by drug addiction. Even during his ill health he continued o play the Trumpet quite beautifully, even losing most of his teeth toward the end did not affect his playing to the extent you would have expected. It was like as though his whole life was just something to pass the time until his next performance.

In his youth Chet had everything, he was a very handsome young man and his early Trumpet playing with Charlie Parker and then the Gerry Mulligan Quartet was a sensation. Mulligan had the first piano-less quartet to hit the Big Time in jazz and it was the brilliant interplay between Mulligan and Baker that made this possible.

On this record Chet plays with his own rhythm section from the US, they were touring in Europe at the time, brilliant French bass player, Jean-Francois Jenny Clarke however was booked to play bass and is a great asset. Chet's playing had a great beauty that was never affected by his circumstances and I never tire of hearing him play. Broken Wing is a haunting ballad and could have been written for and about Chet Baker. Black eyes is a composition of Tenor Sax man Wayne Shorter and although the sleeve note doesn't mention it, Oh you crazy moon has Chet on Vocals, just another of his talents. Blue Gilles is a Baker blues dedicated to album producer Gilles Gautherin.

Two takes of the Black Eyes and the How deep is the ocean tracks are included and the album would be a little short of content without them. This is a session where all four musicians play very well and in all it is a worth while listening experience.

Lucky Thompson, Jean Louis Chautemps - Tenor Sax

Benny Vasseur - Trombone
Teddy Hameline - Alto Sax
William Boucaya - Baritone Sax
Henri Renaud - Piano
Benoit Quersin - Bass
Roger Paraboschi - Drums

Jazz historians have not been kind to Lucky Thompson, his name is rarely mentioned and it is hard when you listen to this album to understand why. In the early days of Modern jazz he played with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, his jazz pedigree also includes the Count Basie Band, Fletcher Henderson and Lionel Hampton. Lucky Thompson has a unique style, which he did not have to adapt to these different bands, his tone and technique are as good as anyone has managed to produce, perhaps it was his reputation as being a difficult character was his undoing. It is generally acknowledged however, that this came from his drive for perfection in his own playing, as well as the playing as the work of those around him. Lucky is still alive but he has not played for a number of years, what a shame!

On this CD you hear him with both a Quartet, tracks 1,3,6 and 8 and with the larger band on the remainder. All of the music is very good; the larger band has a "West Coast" feel about it, I half expected the arrangements to be by Shorty Rogers! The arrangements were the work of very talented pianist Henri Renaud, one of the giants of the French jazz scene. I don't intend to pick out any track in particular, but if you are not familiar with the superb talent of Lucky Thompson, this album is an excellent introduction. If like me you are a Thompson fan, it's a must!

Jean-Luc Ponty - Jazz long playing

Gitanes - 548 150-2
AmazonUK
£6.99

  1. Une nuit au violon

  2. Modo azul
  3. Spanish castels
  4. Sniffin' the blues
  5. Postlude in C
  6. Au Privave
  7. Manoir de mes reves
  8. YTNOP blues
  9. I want to talk about you
  10. A night in Tunisia
  11. Satin doll

Jean- Luc Ponty - Violin
Michael Portal - Flute
Eddy Louiss - Piano, Organ
Gilbert Rovere - Bass
Daniel Humair - Drums

I have to own up to not being familiar with the work of Ponty, before hearing this recording, yes I must have been living under a stone! When this album was recorded he was just 22 years of age and his playing is a sensation. With Stephane Grappelli to signpost the way, I guess it was always obvious that the next genius of the jazz violin would come from that country. Ponty to me seems to have picked up where the old master left off and made giant steps within just a few years. His playing has great warmth, he has massive technical ability and he seems to have absorbed the work of the jazz masters and produced a style of his own. The influence of the better side of John Coltrane's playing can also be heard here on this 1961 recording.

The selection of the programme is also excellent, the work of several French composers are included with Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie and the interest never fades. The band fits together very well and you have the feeling of a session everyone was enjoying their work and giving it 100%.

Highly recommended.

Bill Coleman - From Boogie to Funk

Gitanes - 549 401-2
AmazonUK
£6.99

  1. From boogie to funk. Part1 The Blues

  2. From Boogie to funk Part2 The Boogie
  3. Bill, Bud and butter
  4. Afromotive in blue
  5. Colemanology
  6. Have blues will play'em.

Bill Coleman - Trumpet
Quentin Jackson - Trombone
Budd Johnson - Tenor
Patti Brown - Piano
Les Spann - Guitar
Buddy Catlett - Bass
Joe Harris - Drums

Bill Coleman was one of the first US jazzmen to settle in France having moved there in 1935. It was probably the racism in the USA, that was prevalent in those times, which caused him to emigrate. His playing, which had originally been heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong, developed into an individual, conversational style, but in Paris he was expected to deliver Armstrong inspired music. This album came about because the Quincy Jones Band was in town and Coleman needed the opportunity to play with his peers from over the water. All the tracks are blues of a kind and there are excellent solos from Budd Johnson and Quentin Jackson, who had by this time spent some some years in the Duke Ellington Band. Bill Coleman, able to be himself on this occasion, also makes a significant contribution both with and without mute. Drummer Joe Harris had played in the Dizzy Gillespie Band, but he knew just what a session of this kind needed.

The playing on this album is superb, it would have been nice if the choice of material had been more extensive, but you can't have everything.

I intend to purchase some of the other albums in this series, I have really enjoyed this assignment.
