Much earlier on, in 1950, he had illustrated one of his favourite operas, Ravel's L'Enfant et les Sortileges. When he had finished the paintings, which he did for his own pleasure, he took them over to Paris to show to the writer Colette, librettist of the opera. She was then a very old lady and was so delighted with the paintings that she wrote special captions for each of them. In 1964, with a translation by Christopher Fry, paintings and text were published.
