BERT THOMPSON
Bert Thompson is from the UK, born in Dundee, Scotland, where he played
drums in bagpipe bands. He came to the US in 1956 and was drafted into the
U.S. Army for two years. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, he became
a paratrooper and played drums in the division band.
He earned a B.A. and an M.A. from San Francisco State University and a D.A.
and Ph. D. from the University of Oregon. A professor of English at City
College of San Francisco for over 30 years, he retired a few years ago.
Now retired from playing, Bert drummed with many of the great bands in the
San Francisco area, including 10 years with Professor Plum’s Jazz Band. For
many years, he was a member of Gremoli, a 6-piece New Orleans-style band,
and Ted Shafer's Jelly Roll Jazz Band, an 8-piece Watters/Oliver-style
band.
Over the years Bert has contributed many traditional jazz CD reviews forJust Jazz, The Syncopated Times, theEarlyJas Rag, and several jazz society newsletters, as well as MusicWeb International.
