This disc from Spanish company Columna Musica presents Spanish music for recorders,
here performed by La Folia.
The rather good booklet notes - once one has found them, at the back, after
the Spanish and Chinese versions - give a thorough and in-depth explanation
of the historic background of the music; the establishment of trade routes across
the Atlantic and the way in which various treaties divided the ‘resources’
between Spain and Portugal. This led eventually to the first circumnavigation
of the globe, which brought the Spanish into contact with the Chinese people.
The parallels between the musical cultures is explored, taking as a context
the similarity of social and political structures between the two countries.
Despite this extensive and intriguing discussion, however, the disc leaves one
tantalised by making no attempt to juxtapose these two musical cultures, choosing
rather to explore just the repertoire of Spain and of what is now known as Latin
America. This is possibly because the musics are similar in style, the evolution
of the music of certain parts of the New World having been directly influenced
by that of the Old. The notes are accompanied by appropriate, interesting and
well-produced pictures, and the presentation of the disc and booklet impresses.
The performances are the disappointing part of the disc. My main criticisms
of the playing are that the ensemble is not particularly good at all. The intonation
is often rather insecure; and that the performances are all very one-dimensional.
There is very little variation of articulation, mood, expression, and so on.
Although one is fully aware of the need to breathe and the difficulty of doing
so discreetly in such a context, the breath-taking is very intrusive throughout
and becomes quite wearing - as does the over-blowing of the instruments. I regret
that this was not a disc I could listen to all the way through, for these reasons
- rather, I returned to read the fascinating notes again instead!
