The essay and chronology
supplied with this disc make it worthwhile
to the Breughelly uninitiated. Breughels
work is interesting for his somewhat
larger than life attitude to his subjects,
be it country bumpkins who are partying
or death, that perennial accompaniment
to the human condition. The Naxos essay
is fascinating in itself. This is an
imaginative way to recycle back-catalogue
while simultaneously posing the question
of how valid the parallel comparison
of art and music is, and how fruitful
it can be. Certainly hearing this music
provides an aural backdrop, but how
close Breughels slightly wacky take
on the world correlates with the choral
world of Adrian Willaert with which
the programme opens is open to debate.
But the good news is that Jeremy Summerlys
Oxford Camerata are on top form and
the Magnificat sexti toni is marvelously
performed.
The 31 tracks that
comprise this disc are actually well-contrasted
- the jolly instrumental Susato that
immediately follows on from the Willaert
is a case in point - brazen is the word
that springs to mind!.
Recordings are excellent;
only the Clemens non Papa items seemed
a little lacking in body. Musically
much will delight - try the exchanges
between instrumental groupings in Aenmerckt
nu hier (track 14) for example.
Highlights are Ludwig
Senfls Will niemand singen (recorder
and voices - delicate, with miraculous
intertwining of lines) and the lovely
La pastorella mia (Arcadelt,
track 20) for solo voice, here Shirley
Rumsey, and lute. The drinking song
(track 9, So trinken wir alle)
is great fun, too.
The playing time is
over 75 minutes, which is generous,
especially given the general overall
high standard of performances. This
is a multi-purpose disc, then, one to
initiate people into Breughel (certainly
no bad thing) but also an attractive
musical package in its own right.
Worthy of investigation.
