ANTHONY GILBERT – A 70th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

The Barbirolli Room, The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Saturday October 16th 2004, at 2.00pm.

The distinguished composer Anthony Gilbert was, incredibly, 70 on 26th July. Tony has, in a career spanning some forty years, produced a succession of wonderfully stimulating scores in a multitude of genres from opera to solo instrumental works, which have won the enthusiastic admiration of his contemporaries and the critics, as well as the love and respect of his performers (even though he sometimes stretches them to the uttermost!) His presence has contributed enormously to the richness of musical life in the northwest of England, where he was Head of Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music until his retirement in 1999, even though performances have not been as frequent as his many admirers would have liked. His students at the RNCM have included some of the most distinguished composers working in Britain today, including Martin Butler and Simon Holt.

The artists taking part in the event, which will be attended by the composer, are:

Lesley-Jane Rogers (soprano), John McCabe (piano), Peter Lawson (piano), Janet Simpson (harpsichord/piano), John Turner (recorder), Jonathan Price (cello), and the Camerata Ensemble (string quartet).

The programme will include Anthony Gilbert’s Piano Sonata No. 1, String Quartet No. 3, and the first performance of his Cantata Ondine. In addition the programme will include Stravinsky’s Three Pieces for string quartet and Serenade in A for piano, Robin Walker’s I Thirst, and special tributes by the Australian composers Anne Boyd and David Lumsdaine, as well as Sir John Manduell, Adam Gorb, David Ellis, and Anwen Lewis.

I hope that you can come and share this special event with Tony and his friends. And I hope too that you will stay to join us for light refreshments after the concert. Please let me know how many complimentary tickets you require by returning the attached slip to this address, if possible by the end of August.

Yours sincerely,

Margaret Turner
