The great Russian school of cellists, of which Gorokhov is a worthy representative, shares a distinctive approach to the instrument based on a full-blooded romanticism and immense technical brilliance. Risks are taken, but musicianship always triumphs.

Despite the presence of composers such as Martinu and Ginastera both the music and the performances on this disc have a nineteenth century flavour. Gorokhov, a remarkably versatile player, wins his virtuoso laurels straight away with Martinu's lightweight, though horrendously difficult, Variations on a theme by Rossini. However, cellists will no doubt agree that, at this level, there's more to it than double stopping, glissandi, harmonics and playing very fast, as the beautifully realised transcriptions of Frescobaldi's Toccata (Cassadó) and Weber's Adagio and Rondo (Piatigorsky) amply confirm.

Popper's Dance of the Elves - another technique-twister - and Ginastera's Triste contribute to a varied programme lacking only the spice of truly twentieth century sounds (which could easily have taken the place of Schnittke's dreary Suite in the Old Style).
