Futuris music (piano anthology 1)

This is a thoroughly invigorating and entertaining collection of music related to the Futurism movements in Italy and Russia, researched by this Italian composer, pianist and visual artist and historian of the avant-garde art of the early twentieth century. His purpose is to demonstrate, in their diversity, the ferments at the beginning of the 1900s from which developed the range of today's musical experiences.

The 34 pieces included, many of them brief, are highly diverse and make for arresting and intensive listening. Malipiero, Casella, Scelsi and Stravinsky (represented by his Piano Rag Music of 1919) rub shoulders with the other composers listed above, who will be unknown to most listeners and collectors. Nothing really difficult or unduly daunting, though! A particular surprise for those familiar with his later music will be Scelsi's Rotiva (1919), a mechanistic piece with echoes of Liszt's Mephisto Waltzes.

Excellent piano playing and well recorded sound from studio recordings 1994/97. Lombardi writes an illuminating essay and the booklet is well illustrated with material of the period.
