The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Opus 60 Series: RPO announces four sixty minute concerts for newcomers to classical music (BK)

On Tuesday 7th April 2009 –  at 7pm & 9pm -  and again on  Tuesday 21st April  also at 7pm & 9pm, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra breaks away from the traditional concert format by offering four unique hour-long concerts in the intimate surroundings of Cadogan Hall, Sloane Square. The idea is to offer opportunity to hear fun accessible music, from Mozart’s popular concertos to Schumann’s romantic symphonies, in four bite-size instalments called Opus 60.

Sir David Tang,  a local resident to Cadogan Hall and founder of the Shanghai Tang chain, has generously offered his financial support and vision for the Opus 60 concerts. Sir David says:

It is about time for the traditional concert format to be broken down – too many people find classical music inaccessible and frankly too stuffy. This series successfully does this with one-hour chunks of accessible music, spread across the evening. It’s a much more flexible approach which will hopefully encourage people who may never have dreamt of coming to a performance to cross over a concert venue’s threshold.”

For both the classical connoisseur or first time concert - goers, Opus 60 breaks away from the traditional classical format with its shorter length, inexpensive ticket prices and flexible performance times, offering the perfect introduction to the music of Mozart and Schumann.

Opus 60 concerts start at
7pm and 9pm and are each an hour in length, making it much easier to fit a concert into anyone’s regular evening routine. The 7pm concert  could be ideal for people coming straight from work or perhaps having a relaxed dinner before an hour of culture with the 9pm performance.

The Cadogan Hall is an ideal place for these concerts. With excellent acoustics and an intimate atmosphere it is the perfect place to host these unique events. And as one of London’s most popular concert halls, it’s also easily accessible right in the heart of Sloane Square.

All tickets for any of the Opus 60 concerts are priced at £15 and since mixing music, food and wine is an age-old pastime cherished by many,. Cadogan Hall will also  be offering a platter of good cheeses, accompanied by fine wine, crackers and fruit for £7.50 per person. The concerts all have different programmes so it’s possible to enjoy the  Orchestra twice in one evening, or just pop along to one of them.
