Other News:
On Wednesday, June 10th Natalya Romaniw will appear on the stage of
St David’s Hall, Cardiff, to start her bid to become Wales’ first winner of the
BBC Cardiff Singer of the World.
In a concert of two sopranos, a mezzo, a baritone and a bass, the Swansea-born
student will sing alongside representatives of Australia - Katharine Tier, the
United States of America - Vira Slywotsky, the Czech Republic - Jan Martiník
and Chile – Javier Arrey in this vital concert to determine whether she makes it
to the grand final on Sunday, June 14.
Natalya, a student at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, starts her BBC
Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize campaign on Monday, June 8. The
Australian and Czech singers also sing in that 2pm recital at the New Theatre,
Cardiff together with the Portuguese soprano Dora Rodrigues and baritone Marc
Canturri from Andorra, the first time the Principality has been represented in
the competition in Cardiff.
Formerly the Lieder Prize, the competition has been won twice by Wales; by Bryn
Terfel when it was established in 1989 and in 1991 by Newport’s Neal Davies. The
only person to have won both the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World and the BBC
Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize is the Romanian Marius Brenciu in 2001.
This year the final of the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize will be
held at St David’s Hall on Friday, June 12.
The English mezzo-soprano Anna Stephany sings in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the
World Song Prize on the evening of opening night, Saturday June 6 at the New
Theatre and the Irish representative, Helen Kearns, sings at the New Theatre at
2pm on June 7.
Anna Stephany takes part in the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World at St. David’s
Hall on Monday 8 June and Helen Kearns on Thursday 11 June.
Unfortunately Daniela Lehner, who was to represent Austria at the 2009 BBC
Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, is indisposed and has had to withdraw
from this year’s competition. She will be replaced by the Bulgarian soprano,
Emiliya Ivanova.
Tickets for the five BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition preliminary
concerts and the four BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Song Prize concerts
together with the finals at St David’s Hall are still available. Some season
tickets may also be available.
