There is
no denying that Ozz-Fest has been and looks to continue being the pre-eminent
Hard Rock attraction world-wide so some documentation of the traveling
Metal road show is more than appropriate. “SECOND STAGE LIVE”
was recorded at last year’s Ozz-Fest stopover in Phoenix, Arizona
and picks ten tunes from nine of that evenings featured acts.
SOULFLY contributes two tracks, the brutally funky “Eye for an
Eye” and the throat ripping “Pain.” This pair of songs
captures Max and SOULFLY at their blistering best in front of a hometown
audience. In a single phrase this is simple uncaged fury and two of
the best tracks on an already talent heavy disc.
DISTURBED, who will headline the second stage at this years Ozz-Fest,
is caught as their fuse is shortening and ultimately in full explosion
on “Voices.”
TAPROOT show their full promise on “Mirrors Reflection”
while KITTIE give a by the numbers run at their signature song, “Suck”
and PRIMER 55 recounts a love gone bad in “The Big Fuck You”
for 20,000 of their closest friends.
This disc captures many supreme Metal moments but none as ball crunching
as “Ode to Clarissa” by the incredible QUEENS OF THE STONE
AGE. This song will not be found anywhere else so procurement by QUEENS
fans is an absolute necessity.
SLAVES ON DOPE and PITCHSHIFTER each kick in a track, “Pushing
Me” and “Keep It Clean” respectively with Ozz-Fest
namesake, Ozzy Osbourne, left to end the disc with a classic rendition
of “I Don’t Know.” In addition to the material recorded
specifically for this release the fine folks in the Osbourne organization
have seen fit to insert a second CD which is essentially a re-issue
of the first Ozz-Fest Live CD from ’97. Pretty nifty bonus as
you get one track each from Ozzy, COAL CHAMBER, EARTH CRISIS, POWERMAN
5000, NEUROSIS, FEAR FACTORY, BIOHAZARD, SEPULTURA and SLAYER at no
extra cost. For completist who need everything you will want to hang
onto your origional Ozz-Fest Live disc because the track by CELLOPHANE
is omitted here but then again I don’t think that band itself
even exists any more so. . .
All told a hefty 85 minutes of today’s and tomorrows best Hard
Rock and Heavy Metal caught live in the Ozz-Fest act. I am already looking
forward to next year’s edition!
