There were a plethora of disposable pop bands in the eighties who
contributed little more than some embarrassing fashion statements but THE
FIXX isn't one of them despite consistently being heaped in with others
of that generation. Sure THE FIXX fit with the skinny tie set and often
appeared as though they stood a better chance of getting laid with a shy
smile than with flexed biceps but here is a band that could actually
compose good dance music with lyrics that were worth a listen, they could
also pull it of live, not the case with the early electronica crowd.
Here are twelve examples of 80's music worth remembering sans any
embarrassment for doing so. The groups biggest hit had to be, I am
guessing here, as I wasn't following the charts at the time, "One Thing
Leads To Another." Every kid with a FLOCK OF SEAGULLS haircut spun this
one.
"Deeper & Deeper" had a sexual overtone to it that still makes women
melt, I tried it, I know! Now ya just can't do that with a SLAYER
record, I've tried that too, it doesn't work.
There are many hits here but the one that is likely to get a lot of play
nowadays is the live version of "Red Skies." This song has the
distinction of being personally chosen by Nancy Reagan for the drug
damnation train soundtrack to her "Just Say No" campaign. The former
First Lady was badly advised on her choice as the song is not a drug song
at all but once she vilified it as such it became the theme song for the
Acid House movement that sprung up in the later eighties giving it a
second and third life not to mention fatter wallets to the writers.
A wonderful collection of FIXX music this is and despite the fact that
the band continues to tour and record this is the best that is ever
likely to be collected so turn up the volume close your eyes and see if
the video for "Saved by Zero" doesn't come streaming back brighter and
clearer than the original.
