Feeder - Echo Park (2001)
After the triumphs of Polythene and Yesterday When Too Soon, expectation for Feeders third full length opus Echo Park has being nothing less than big M massive. So what of their latest EP (forgive the pun)? With the odd reservation, all good things - tuneful treats as regular as unlimited complimentary cream cakes in a coffee shop, all gift wrapped in a bundle of sheer class.
The fact that the group have already established half of the material as immediate crowd favourites live tells you something about just how good a record this is.
Single releases Buck Rogers and Seven Days In The Sun, the main Feeder talking points in recent weeks, are the most immediate show stealers and easily two of the best hits you'll hear all year, whatever the weather. Filled with all the bubbly rock of the aforementioned, We Can't Rewind could so easily join the hits club. As could Turn, an authentic tear jerker with all the traditional Feeder shade - and Oxygen, a number that simply chills. Feeder chief Grant Nicolas's songwriting has blossomed to levels that'd threaten acre upon acre of genetically modified Sunflowers, while lyrics prove just as sweet smelling a bunch of roses.
Whether Under The Weather and demanding Neurofen plus, talking about girls working shifts in Sainsbury's (Seven Days In The Sun) or profoundly declaring "It's easy to forget what you have got" (Turn), the varying sense of emotions in words pleasingly add to the discs feel.
Although Feeder are about much more than fancy words and quick fire chart hits. Choke is a king riffed head crusher that shows them putting some tuneful weight on, while closer Revolution likewise shows Nicolas's ability to rock things up in just the right measures.
Fillers are never brandished, although Grant does have a scary habit of vocally resembling the Lightning Seeds and opener Standing On The Edge is half the song on record it is live. But such quibbles have little impact on affecting a record you must buy - a release that is one of 2001s finest.
