Withering
Surface - Walking On Phantom Ice
Compared
to Sweden Denmark hasn't had many successful metal bands in the past with
the two most famous probably being Konkhra and of course Mercyful Fate
/ King Diamond. Withering Surface might be the next big export from the
small Scandinavian country and just like a lot of the most famous Swedish
bands they focus on melody in front of brutality and aggression. If you
like melodic death metal in the vein of In Flames and At The Gates this
is a new band to look out for in the future. The vocals of Withering Surface
are however slightly more brutal then modern day In Flames. There are
also some "clean" vocals which could have been left out completely because
they are not sounding very good. The band started out very promising in
1994 and their first demo recording was awarded demo of the year by the
Danish national radio. Soon they signed a two album deal with Euphonious
Records and now they are ready to release their third album on their new
label, the British Copro Records. The production of the new album is almost
flawless thanks to Berno Paulsson at Berno Studios, Malmoe, Sweden, who
has also produced the latest albums from Deranged and The Haunted. This
is a very good melodic death metal album but Withering Surface still have
one or two steps to climb before they are on the same level as the leading
Swedish bands.
