Here is one of the finer examples of a band that is worthy of a re-birth
and a set of re-issues is not a bad place to start. Each disc comes with
the obligatory bonus tracks and revised liner notes which are very well
done though it would have been nice to see the insides in color, but how
could you complain with music so good?
The re-issue of RAVEN product starts exactly where it should, with the
incredible "ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP" record which set the standard for metal
trio's in the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, (all due respect to Lemmy
and MOTORHEAD but they had been around for a while by the time this wave
swept ashore.)
Classics like "Hell Patrol" "Hellraiser, "Action" and "Tyrant of the
Airways" could have been on a disc by themselves and would have made an
album better than anything on the store shelves at the time, which was
1981 for those who can't remember. Incredible stuff to begin with and
here they are again all cleaned up and re-mastered.
The bonus tracks are, "Wiped Out"(what a yelp!), "Inquisitor" and Crazy
World."
From 1982 we have "WIPED OUT" which was a bit more polished a record
than its predecessor but still packed the same punch. "Faster Than the
Speed of Light" is said to have been a major influence of early
METALLICA, you damn sure can't blame the later day Metali-crap on RAVEN,
that is for sure. "Fire Power" is so beautifully dated that it should be
used as the centerpiece for any compilation form the period.
The bonus tracks for "WIPED OUT" are, "Crash Bang Wallop," "Run Them
Down" and "Rock Hard."
"ALL FOR ONE" was my first RAVEN record and I still have it albeit it
with half the grooves unplayibly worn sot his comes at just the right
time for me. Each track is a calculated killer and by this disc you
realize that the band must have been turning it up louder and louder with
each record so this scarcely needs to be on "2" to be heard but if you
want your mind blended to a fine puree then 10, as always, will get the
job done.
My god, is there anything heavier than "Take Control?" I think not!
"Hung Drawn & Quartered" comes close as does "Seek and Destroy" but you
just can't start a record off any better than "Take Control." Also worth
mentioning is "Mind over Metal" which should be the band's theme song,
well, maybe not.
Bonus tracks to "ALL FOR ONE" are: "Born to be Wild," "The Ballad of
Marshall Stack" and "Inquisitor" all featuring Udo Dirkschneider of
ACCEPT on vocals. The only thing that detracts from these three is the
snapping on "Ballad," sounds like they lost the original tapes and made a
copy from a vinyl copy, still, it rules!
RAVEN never really did blow up the way that they deserved to and its not
going to be a trip straight to the top of the charts now but with the
re-release of these three groundbreaking albums the legend is taken up a
notch and deservedly so.
