There is no shortage of live IRON MAIDEN out there, I believe the official releases number better than half a dozen, but what has ruefully been absent is a comprehensive collection of live tracks featuring origional vocalist Paul DiAnno. That situation has partially been righted with the incredible “THE BEAST LIVE.”
Since IRON MAIDEN is unwilling to release any live tapes from this era it was left to DiAnno himself to pick the best renditions of these classic MAIDEN songs from his twenty years of live performances away from the band. DiAnno succeeded in culling ten tracks from his days with KILLERS, BATTLEZONE and DiANNO that stand toe to toe with anything previously available, often besting those older recordings.
Here you have all the standards you would expect, “Iron Maiden,” “Killers,” “Wrathchild,” “Running Free,” “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “Prowler,” “Remember Tomorrow,” and “Sanctuary” along with the only live version of “Women in Uniform” available anywhere in any format. So what of the performance? Simply put, it is awesome. DiAnno is in top form and far more aggressive than on the previous live standard, “MAIDEN JAPAN.” There is a consistency to the sound and performances that makes the finished product sound as though it was taken from a single concert which of course it was not but I challenge anyone to find the seams.
Would I prefer to have some live IRON MAIDEN circa 1981? Of course but if this warts and all collection is to be my only choice I am more than happy with it. “Up the Irons!”
