THE WILLIAM MATHIAS COMPOSITION PRIZE 2002
In association with the Bangor New Music Festival and Composers of Wales
In memory of one of Wales' most celebrated composers, and also to mark the tenth anniversary of his death, the William Mathias Composition Prize 2002 (WMCP) aims to encourage new works by promising composers from Wales and the rest of Britain, and to be presented with the opportunity to be featured in one of the most significant music festivals in Wales. The prize is jointly organised by the Bangor New Music Festival and Composers of Wales, both committed in encouraging composers and in the promotion of new music.
The prize will be presented for a song or cycle of songs on any chosen text for baritone voice and piano. The work should be between 3 and 8 minutes in duration with a voice range from low G up to high F#. There are no restrictions on style.
Selected songs will be performed by Jeremy Huw Williams during a workshop on Friday 12 April 2002 at 1:30pm, led by a distinguished composer (to be announced). The selected composers are required to participate. One piece will then be selected for the afternoon concert on Saturday 13 April at 1pm. The announcement of the result and presentation will take place during the concert.
The prize consists of the following:
- £250,
- A professional performance by Jeremy Huw Williams during the Bangor New Music Festival 2002,
- A choice of £100 worth of Mathias scores (kindly donated by Oxford University Press),
- A recording of the work (for personal use only).
Only the title of the piece (and not the composer's name) should appear on the score. Each composition shall be accompanied with a sealed envelope giving the following information:
Inside - the title of the piece, the composer's full name, address, and telephone number.
Outside - the title of the piece only.
