A veritable hotchpotch. Ranging from Ronan Keating singing ‘When You Say Nothing at All’ (Notting Hill) to extracts from Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard’s Gladiator score, this is a rag-tag bundle of disparate movie music that is linked by the Universal studio logo and nothing else. As to if any serious film music fan would want to own this I have my doubts and in fairness the target audience is far more likely to be the casual cinema-goer who has enjoyed some of the movies featured. In terms of highlights there are of course a few, with the aforementioned Gladiator’s two cues (‘Now We are Free’ and ‘The Battle’), Nicole Kidman performing vocals on ‘One Day I’ll Fly Away’ taken from the extraordinary Moulin Rouge (2001) and James Horner’s ‘For the Love of a Princess’ from Braveheart all very worthwhile. But there are also many tracks devoted to the usual songs we have come to expect on this kind of compilation and their appeal is variable to say the least.

Entertaining after a fashion, diverse to be sure. Something for everyone perhaps.
