Benefit for Kitezh Ludwig van BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) Warmly recommended for both musical and charitable reasons! Fantasia for piano, chorus and orchestra Johannes BRAHMS (1833–1897) Clarinet sonata Nos 1 & 2 Robert SCHUMANN (1810–1856) Fantasiestücke Martin Berkofsky (piano) and various other artists, rec. 2004-5 CRISTOFORI [GF]

Hector BERLIOZ (1803-1869) Dame Janet Baker’s contributions are a must-have, but they amount to 47 minutes out of 138 and the rest is pretty wet La Damnation de Faust; La Mort de Cléopatre (1829) [20:56] Dame Janet Baker and various other artists, rec. 1969 EMI CLASSICS [CH]

Edward ELGAR (1857-1934) An exemplary organ recital, excellently recorded in stylish, colourful, committed performances taking full advantage of all the splendours of the great Father Willis Organ at Salisbury Cathedral Works for Organ Thomas Trotter (organ) rec. Salisbury Cathedral, 2006 REGENT [IL]

William Henry HARRIS (1883-1973) This is a first rate production which all devotees of Anglican church music will surely savour Choral Music The Choir of St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle/Timothy Byram-Wigfield rec. 2006 NAXOS [JQ]

Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756-1791) Another lovely release from Australian Eloquence, but there are sonic reservations Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra; Concertone for Two Violins and Orchestra Alan Loveday (violin); Stephen Shingles (viola); Academy of St Martin in the Fields/Sir Neville Marriner rec. 1960-70 DECCA ELOQUENCE [TP]

Christopher ROUSE (b.1949) This represents the ideal introduction to Rouse’s music and its return to the catalogue is very welcome Trombone Concerto; Gorgon; Iscariot Joseph Alessi (trombone); Colorado Symphony Orchestra/Marin Alsop rec.1997 PHOENIX [TH]

RECORDING OF THE MONTH Jean SIBELIUS (1865–1957) Hynninen’s singing is on such a high level, vocally and interpretatively, that it is hard to believe that anyone could challenge him Songs Jorma Hynninen (baritone); Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra/Leif Segerstam rec. 1994 ONDINE [GF]

American Virtuosa I had anticipated dipping in to this disc, but found, like reading any truly good book, I could not put it down or, in listening terms, switch it off Tribute to Maud Powell Rachel Barton Pine (violin); Mathew Hagle (piano) rec. 2006 CEDILLE RECORDS [CF]

Chamber Music for Piano and Wind Instruments Vovka Ashkenazy and the Reykjavík Wind Quintet perform these scores persuasively without any tendency for histrionics Vovka Ashkenazy (piano); Reykjavík Wind Quintet: rec. 1999 CHANDOS [MC]

This Time It’s Personal This is only recommendable for novelty value then, although, as you can probably tell, its hard not to be just a little jealous - alright I admit it! Stephen Ketterer (organ) rec. 2006 MSR CLASSICS [CB]
