This is the third Naxos "Chill" disc I have reviewed, and I’m starting to wonder how the good folks at Naxos define the word. The "Chill with Mozart" disc well represented a relaxed and feel-good mood, but "Chill with Satie" consisted primarily of dark and mysterious music. "Chill with Rachmaninov" is mainly a mix of sad/mournful selections and pieces expressing strong romantic fervor. One of the works, the Barcarolle from "Morceaux de salon", even takes us into the world of apprehension.

Whether conveying the right mood or not, I must say that this disc makes for a compelling listening experience as one gorgeous work follows another. Further, the performances are all top-notch and in exceptional sound. I am particularly taken with the Vocalise in its cello and orchestra arrangement and the two solo piano pieces from Idil Biret.

Such sumptuously romantic music from one of the greatest classical music composers of any era is especially desirable at the Naxos price. The company has chosen excellent artists and orchestras to convey Rachmaninov’s soundworld, and the sultry nature of the music is fully realized.

As a "chill" disc, I have reservations, but the recording is exceptional as a sampler of the wonderful music Rachmaninov has to offer listeners. Overall, I consider "Chill with Rachmaninov" a fine choice as an introduction to new classical music fans and those looking forward to a sensuous evening draped in rapture.
