WEELKES, Thomas
b Sussex?, baptised 25 October 1576
d London, buried 1 December 1623, aged forty-seven

The earliest known fact about him is the publication of his first volume of madrigals in 1597. In 1598, for three or four years, he was organist at Winchester College. In 1602 he joined the choir of Chichester Cathedral, and in that year was awarded the BMus from New College, Oxford.

He wrote a vast number of madrigals, sacred works and services, and some instrumental works.
