TELEMANN, Georg Philipp
b Magdeburg, 14 March 1681
d Hamburg, 25 June 1767, aged eighty-six

His father was a clergyman. He was largely self-taught in music, though he studied languages and science at the University of Leipzig. He composed operas for Leipzig theatres, became a church organist and later was Kapell-meister for various small courts. Eventually he returned to the church, and was musical director of five principal churches in Hamburg from 1721 until his death.
