ROUSSEL, Albert
b Tourcoing, 5 April 1869
d Royan, 23 August 1937, aged sixty-eight

He was born into a family of wealthy industrialists. He trained for a naval career, but resigned in 1894 and went to Paris to study music. In 1898 he enrolled at the Schola Cantorum, completing the course ten years later. He was professor of counterpoint from 1902 to 1914. In 1909 he began an extended tour of India and south-east Asia. In 1922 he moved to Normandy, where he stayed for the rest of his life, continuing to write in spite of indifferent health.
