She was born in a remote area near Zululand. At the age of ten she went as a violin student to the South African College of Music. In 1920 a scholarship brought her to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she settled permanently. A grant in 1935 enabled her to concentrate on composition. Before the outbreak of World War II she studied briefly with Boulanger in Paris. In 1942 she was appointed professor of composition at the Royal Academy and she was elected a fellow in 1953. Also in 1953 she was made a Collard fellow of the Worshipful Company of the City of London. She has received many commissions.
