He was a chorister in St Paul's Cathedral, and then became a pupil of Byrd. He was choirmaster at Norwich Cathedral from 1583 to 1587. He graduated from Oxford in 1588. In 1589 he became organist at St Paul's, and in 1592 was sworn as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. Between 1596 and 1601 he lived in the same parish in London as Shakespeare, and there is little doubt that they knew each other.
