He is of Italian parentage. He studied at the Oberlin Conservatory, then served in the US Army Air Force. After demobilisation he resumed his music studies at the Eastman School, under Howard Hanson and took a summer course in conducting with Koussevitzky at Tanglewood. From 1947 to 1958 he taught at the Juillard School, then served as director of the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore from 1958 to 1962. In 1962 he was appointed president of the Juillard School.
